BREAKING: U.S. Justice Department Flags Tina Peters Case in Nationwide Review of Alleged Justice Abuses

Washington, D.C. – March 3, 2025 – The U.S. Department of Justice has highlighted the case of Tina Peters, a former Colorado clerk, in its nationwide review of potential abuses in the criminal justice process. In a Statement of Interest filed today in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado (Case No. 1:25-cv-00425-STV), the Justice Department questions whether Colorado’s prosecution of Peters—currently serving a nine-year sentence for nonviolent convictions—was “oriented more toward inflicting political pain than pursuing actual justice.”

The filing, submitted under 28 U.S.C. § 2254, also raises concerns about Peters’ health, her sentence length, and First Amendment issues from her October 2024 trial. The Justice Department’s intervention aligns with a February 5, 2025, memorandum from the Attorney General and President Trump’s January 20, 2025, Executive Order aimed at ending the “weaponization” of federal agencies. The review will assess cases nationwide, including Peters’, for political bias.
