I loved the movie “9 to 5.” It had a wonderful cast including Lily Thomlin, Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Dabney Coleman. It was 1980 and I was just 16 years old, my mother liked country music and even dressed up as Dolly Parton on Halloween. The film related to me as I was about to start my career as an office worker thanks to the typewriting class in high school. In this film the staff of women have a sexist male boss and aim to get their revenge against him.
Dolly wrote the song “9 to 5” for the film which earned her a nomination for an Academy Award and she won the Grammy Award for Best Country song.
The song was super catchy and radio friendly. I remember it well and just may have to revisit the film this evening. The movie really changed the course of the office world in regards to equal pay and sexual discrimination to name a few. I would like to say that Dolly spearheaded equality for all genders in the workplace.
The film was followed up by both a TV series that ran for 5 seasons in the 80’s and a Stage Performance on Broadway in 2009.
The shock of seeing her gone this morning was quite sad. I don’t think you could find anyone more genuine and sweeter than her. She had a big heart and a big legacy for us to enjoy. "Sweeter than sunshine" is a popular phrase used to describe Dolly Parton's famously warm, bright, and-charming personality.
Rest in peace Dolly…
