Lora, Michelle Grodnick · Lora

Growing up, we all knew our Sun Signs. We’d read the back of a magazine and form labels about ourselves that felt like we needed to latch onto: Leos are dramatic, Virgos are type A, Libras like pretty things, and Cancers are emotional. Astrology, done.

But when the Sun goes down, and this gorgeous, mysterious, glowing rock comes into view, we stare in awe. There is something about leaving your dinner plans, and as you walk out of the restaurant, you lock eyes with the Moon, and it stops you in your tracks. You’re reminded, for just a second, that you are living on a rock hurling through space, and this shining silver light entangles you in the story of the larger cosmos.

This emotional resonance we have when we connect with the Moon is part of a larger story. The Moon influences the tides, a woman’s menstrual cycle, and is the original timekeeper. It is so innately connected to life on Earth that the astrology of the Moon feels a lot more personal than that of the Sun.

How many of you learned your Moon sign and had a reaction like “Okay now THAT makes sense…” making you feel more seen & understood? For years, astrology didn’t resonate with me because I heard that I was a Capricorn, which meant I was serious & hardworking, but I was also a Theatre girl, an extrovert, and, in my opinion, had a great sense of humor. It wasn’t until I found out that I had a Gemini Moon that things really locked into place for me.

As an astrologer, I’m way more interested in your Moon sign than your Sun sign. The Moon spends just 2.5 days in a sign, so it’s way more specific to your birth moment than the Sun, which takes up a whole month in a sign. The Moon tells me about who you really are on the inside, versus the Sun which describes more of your topline outward behaviors.

In a Birth Chart, the Moon can tell us so much:

  • How you were raised & parented

  • What your mother/primary caregiver is like

  • What you were like as a child

  • Your attachment style

  • How you feel most comfortable and safe

  • Your emotional response patterns

  • Your core needs in life

  • How you nurture yourself and others

  • What makes you feel emotionally fulfilled

  • Who you are when you’re alone or with your closest people

Let’s tell the story of Moon signs, one by one. Note that no placement can be understood from the sign alone. Your Moon's house, aspects, and the rest of your chart all shape how it shows up. But if you've ever wanted the quickest way to understand your emotional wiring, your Moon sign is where I'd start.

With the Moon in Aries, you have a core need for freedom and independence. You don’t want to be told what to do, and you’d rather take action based on what you think is right vs the way other people do it. The best way to get you to do something is to make you think it was YOUR idea. Your emotional reactions can be impulsive, and you can quickly cut someone down without thinking about how it will affect their feelings. When you care about someone, you will literally go to battle for them and will be overly protective of your loved ones. You have a primal need for creativity and spontaneity and love an adventure. If you’re feeling down, your best bet is to get physical: jump around, go for a run, or punch a pillow. A fire lives within you, and your passion is very real.

Safety, security, and stability are where it’s at for you. Uncertainty isn’t cute, and you need to know exactly where everyone is at. Change is very disorienting for you, and uncertainty threatening your sense of stability is the hardest thing to bear. You hold your opinions and feelings tightly– once your mind is made, it’s a near-impossible feat to change it. You have a core need for physical comfort and a strong sense of home. Needless to say, the nomadic life is not for you. Your feelings are embodied, and when you’re emotionally activated, you are physically affected by what’s going on inside, so it’s important that you take extra care to make your surroundings + home environment fit your needs.

Communication is everything for a Gemini Moon. In order to get over something, you need to talk about it, or else it will just fester in your head forever. You lean anxious in tough situations because your mind goes crazy with a million different scenarios that could happen. You also love to laugh in tough situations, and a little humor goes a long way. Nothing calms you down more than a gossip sesh with friends where you feel full with information on what’s going on with who. Your comfort shows are reality TV. Your friends mean everything to you, and you couldn’t live without them. You’re amazing at expressing your emotions and being clear about how you really feel.

You like to live in your memories. Nostalgia is a huge part of your life, and you keep friends and people in your life for as long as you can because history matters. Even if you’re an extrovert, it’s really important that you have your alone time to recharge. When you’re ‘in a mood,’ you’re IN A MOOD, and you could snap at people who don’t understand that. In times of need, you run home in whatever way that means to you: your parents’ house, back to your bed, or to your childhood best friend. It takes you a long time to warm up to new people and actually let them see a vulnerable side of you because comfort is your core need, and in order to feel comfortable around someone, that takes time.

You need to be validated. A Leo Moon must feel seen, fully, for their accomplishments and victories. Finally got out of bed after a stomach bug? Celebrate. Finished a project you’ve been working on all week? Celebrate. Made it out to the birthday dinner even though you weren’t in the mood? Celebrate!! Leo Moon must proclaim your moods at the top of your lungs, and everyone must know how you feel. You’re a performer at heart, and when you’re with people you feel comfortable around, your silly and creative nature will always come out.

Being misunderstood is your worst fear. You think your feelings before you feel them. Everything is rationalized before reacting. You always want to help and be helpful. You’ll keep your feelings to yourself because you don’t want to be a bother, but you will send yourself into a lonely spiral over them for a loooong time. Replaying weird conversations in your head is your specialty. This is random, but you may have a finicky digestive system and need to stick to a specific food regimen. You’re specific about what you need, and that’s okay– just remember you can’t always be in control.

Libra Moon needs everything to feel fair. The thing that will set you off the most is something that feels unjust. As a kid, your mantra was probably “that’s not fair!” because, to Libra Moon’s dismay, life isn’t fair. This is a tough pill to swallow for Libra Moon, and you will likely go throughout life doing a mental jigsaw puzzle to act in a way that feels the fairest to everyone around you. You do best in pairs, and it’s hard for you to accomplish things on your own without a partner, confidant, or collaborator. It’s not that you aren’t capable of accomplishing things on your own; it’s that there is a certain comfort and validation that comes from talking through your mindset and seeing it through another person’s perspective.

There’s a phrase I always use for Scorpio Moon: “stuck in the mud.” Scorpio experiences an emotion, and it’s like time stands still. This thing, fight, transgression, weird comment… whatever it is, Scorpio Moon latches onto it and dives into it in full scuba gear and does not emerge until every moment has been picked apart, analyzed, felt, grieved, and transformed into something totally new. Yes, you will hold a grudge. Yes, you will forgive but never forget. Your relationship with your mother/primary caregiver goes one of two ways: either intensely distraught, or incredibly close. There is usually no in-between.

Congratulations, you have the best vibes. There is something about a Sagittarius Moon that doesn’t take life too seriously and lives in the bigger picture. That being said, when life does get serious, you have trouble handling it. Spiritual bypassing, brushing things under the rug, and moving on before emotions are actually dealt with are common crutches for Sag Moon. Your core needs to revolve around freedom, non-attachment, learning, and experiencing the excitement that life has to offer. Because you have such a philosophical spirit, you actually have a lot to teach your friends & loved ones– don’t forget to share the knowledge and not keep it to yourself!

You have a lot of feelings, but you would really prefer to handle them privately, efficiently, and without making a big deal about it. You learned early on that you need to be responsible and keep it together, so your first instinct is usually to push your emotions aside and get to work. You may have trouble asking for help because you don’t want to be a burden or appear incapable. You are incredibly dependable and will show up for the people you love, even if you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, and running on fumes. You’re much softer than you let on, but people may have to earn access to that side of you. Your biggest emotional lesson is realizing that you do not have to accomplish something, fix something, or be useful in order to deserve rest and care.

You need SPACE. When you’re in an emotional state, your first instinct is often to step back and analyze it from a safe distance rather than immediately diving into the feeling itself. You are incredibly independent and can feel suffocated by people who need constant emotional reassurance or access to you. You have a unique way of seeing the world and may feel like you are observing life from a slightly different angle than everyone else. You have a core need for a like-minded community of friends where you can share ideas with and feel seen by. You can be a little emotionally unpredictable– not because you don’t care, but because you need the freedom to change your mind, change your perspective, and change your feelings without being trapped by who you were yesterday.

Your emotions are like a sponge. Your deep sense of empathy is both a gift and a curse. You are an incredible resource for your friends and family when they are in distress because you are so good at holding space for them to feel. At the same time, though, the fact that you can feel others’ emotions can be really dysregulating for you, so you need to learn how to have boundaries. Let’s be real, boundaries do not come easily for you, and sometimes you find yourself lost in the sauce of someone else’s emotions and are unsure where you start and where they begin. You may have been called a “sensitive child” and feel some shame around that, but remember, sensitivity is your superpower.
