When you’re learning to read a Birth Chart, understanding the archetypes of the planets is one of the most important things you will do.
I like to think of the planets as the actors on the stage of your birth chart and the sign they are in as their costume. The archetype of a planet is always the same, but it behaves differently based on what sign it’s in.
Before we dive in, we’re so excited to share that Lora is now on the App Store! As many of you know, we have been building one of the first-ever personalized astrology apps alongside this community, our incredible spiritual practitioners, and our head of Astrology, Michelle!
We want you first in line to try the app! Head to the App Store here and tap “get” to be one of the first to try Lora, and thank you for being in our orbit and community!
The best way to understand a planet’s vibe is by understanding planetary dignities. Dignities tell us which signs planets like to be in the most. There are four types of planetary dignities:
Domicile or Rulership
When a planet is in its domicile, it’s very comfortable in that position. A planet’s domicile is the sign that it rules. This sign exhibits similar characteristics of the planet itself.
Detriment
When a planet is in the opposite sign of its domicile, it’s in detriment: it’s pretty uncomfortable. Think of this like you’re trying to do gymnastics, but you’re wearing jeans that have no stretch. Maybe you can still do a cartwheel or almost get into a split, but it’s hard and not your best work.
Exaltation
When a planet is in its exalted position, it’s truly thriving. It’s not just comfortable, but even more evolved and able to shine. This planet gives your whole chart an extra boost.
Fall
When a planet is in the opposite sign of its exaltation, it’s in its Fall. When a planet is in its fall, it’s kind of handicapped. Think of this like you’re trying to do gymnastics but you have a broken arm. You’d really have to practice and work hard at doing all the moves one-handed.
The Planetary Dignities
Before we get into all the planetary dignities, I want to note how I actually use them. These definitions are incredible for educational purposes to understand the planets and signs in a deeper way. When you think about why a planet would be exalted or in its fall in certain signs, you get to understand the planetary archetype more holistically.
I do not use planetary dignities to discern “bad” vs “good” planets. Sometimes, even a planet in its fall can be a strength in your life. For example, you may have Venus in Virgo, but you’re a mathematician, and you get a thrill from problem-solving and analysis. You might struggle with low self-esteem, but your career as a mathematician brings you so much purpose and excitement.
Similarly, even an exalted planet can give you life lessons. For example, you may have Venus in Pisces, but you struggle with healthy boundaries in relationships. You might be a transcendent musician and your lyrics are intoxicating, but sometimes you get lost in the fantasy.
From my pov, astrology is never black & white, so I suggest using the planetary dignities as a learning tool vs. using them to grade your chart in some way.
Now let’s get into the dignities!
The Sun
Domicile: Leo (loves to be seen, center of attention)
Detriment: Aquarius (more about community than individual)
Exalted: Aries (extra willpower and drive)
Fall: Libra (cares more about others than self)
The Moon
Domicile: Cancer (sign of the nurturer)
Detriment: Capricorn (not comfortable with emotions)
Exalted: Taurus (extra focused on comfort and safety)
Fall: Scorpio (feelings are too intense to bear)
Mercury
Domicile: Gemini & Virgo (Great communication)
Detriment: Sagittarius & Pisces (long-winded)
Exalted: Virgo (analytical and efficient thinker)
Fall: Pisces (more emotional than mental)
Venus
Domicile: Taurus & Libra (luxury, beauty, relationships)
Detriment: Scorpio & Aries (more about action and hard work than enjoying)
Exalted: Pisces (extra dreamy, creative, compassionate)
Fall: Virgo (wants to be efficient & useful vs just enjoying & luxuriating)
Mars
Domicile: Aries & Scorpio (confrontational warrior-like energy)
Detriment: Libra & Taurus (non-confrontational, would rather receive than take action)
Exalted: Capricorn (disciplined and not afraid of a challenge)
Fall: Cancer (would rather do anything else than get into a fight or confront something)
Jupiter
Domicile: Sagittarius & Pisces (knowledge-seeking, expansive, optimistic)
Detriment: Gemini & Virgo (more into the details & facts vs the big picture)
Exalted: Cancer (Generous & giving)
Fall: Capricorn (Scarcity mindset)
Saturn
Domicile: Capricorn & Aquarius (structured, high morals, mission-oriented)
Detriment: Cancer & Leo (more emotional & less structured)
Exalted: Libra (Fairness & justice)
Fall: Aries (hates rules)
Because planetary dignities are a traditional astrology technique, the modern planets aren’t much of a focus. That being said, the modern planets do have modern rulership, so it’s helpful to have that knowledge:
Uranus
Domicile: Aquarius (Innovation, community)
Neptune
Domicile: Pisces (Dreamy, compassionate)
Pluto
Domicile: Scorpio (Shadow work, death/rebirth)
Go through each of your planets and notice if they are in their domicile, detriment, exaltation, or fall. Think about how this shows up in your behavior and everyday life.
Every week we spotlight incredible spiritual practitioners, and we’re so excited to introduce you to the incredible Transformational Teacher and Vocal Empowerment Coach, Michelle Coutinho!
Lora: Tell us a bit about you and your practice.
Michelle: I like to joke that I’m an energy healer disguised as a coach because I primarily work through the energetic quality of transmission. In my 1:1 intuitive counseling practice, I have the ability to clairaudiently ‘hear’ and receive where you are on your own Hero’s Journey.
I see your story from above and give you a bird’s-eye view of who you are archetypally, the way you are energetically wired, where you are losing power, and guide you forward in what steps to take so you integrate your current lessons and become your most authentic self. Together, we make sense of your inherited or ancestral patterns, clear past-life blocks, and make room for your true creative voice and empowered self-expression to come through.
I offer somatic and yogic-based practices like teaching grounding and meditation techniques, Internal Family Systems-informed coaching, or Vocal Empowerment style chakra toning practices.
Because of my teacher, Ram Dass, I see our life on Earth as a school curriculum, and we are here to learn lessons, transmute suffering, and clear the contractions and karmic blockages we carry (sometimes on behalf of our lineage) so we can allow more of our soul to come through. I believe our voice and our embodiment is a conduit of healing and also the unique fingerprint of our soul.
And so our relationship with our voice and our creative expression represents our relationship with freedom and how much we are spiritually surrendered to allow the infinite to move through us. Through mentorship and devotional leadership, I empower others to become an instrument of healing.
Lora: What moment or realization made astrology and/or tarot “click” for you in a real, lived way?
Michelle: I have been studying archetypes through astrology and tarot since I was 9 years old, but really all of my life because of my new age, belly dancing momma.
My first card deck was Medicine Cards, a Native American-style animal totem deck first published in 1988. I remember my mom having them when I was five years old, when the deck had just come out, and I still have her original copy on my altar today.
I began offering readings publicly after my 3rd eye opened in my mid 20s. That was when astrology and divination moved from being something I had studied since childhood into something I could teach, transmit, and offer to others. Soon after, my intuitive gifts moved into energy and sound healing and have only deepened over time.
Astrology has been a guiding light in my world. I honor these divination systems that we use as maps that speak to the laws of the natural world that people have studied for generations.
Lora: What’s something most people misunderstand about astrology and/or tarot that you’re always gently correcting?
Michelle: I think people don’t often look at their lives as if they are a character in a story. Imagine witnessing yourself as a character and seeing yourself from outside as if you were watching a movie. You can see in your astrology chart the potential internal conflicts you might have, how you get in your own way, and what you are meant to learn and do in this world.
It’s also such a blessing to take note of the patterns of your life based on where the nodes are and how they affect you personally. You can look back and notice, for example, that every time the north and south nodes are in Sagittarius and Gemini, which are my personal natal placements, those are really expansive years for me where I get to teach and travel!
People tend to think of astrology in extremes. The art is either entirely false or 100% absolute and predictive. The same can be said of Tarot. The maps are there to give us information and be guideposts along the way.
But we are meant to navigate as we learn the insights and information, and use these tools to make choices that will best empower our future selves and who we are choosing to become.
Lora: Tell us your thoughts on the astrology of 2026 and how it’s likely showing up in people’s everyday lives right now.
Michelle: As I write this, we are in the middle of eclipse season, and I believe that through the end of the year, with the Mercury and Venus retrogrades and Mercury and Venus moving direct simultaneously, we are going to be deeply reformatted.
It seems like every person is going through a large level up that is also dismantling an old identity. This year was a transition year where a lot of the outer planets moved from earth and water into air and fire. When that happens, the first year can feel like the ground is shaky underneath us.
I believe a lot of people are going through huge identity shifts that are rebirthing parts of themselves they have been working on since 2018, when the nodal axis was opposite what it is currently. Right now the South Node has moved into Leo, but in 2017 and 2018 the North Node was in Leo, so we are experiencing a reversal.
We have also been working diligently since 2019 and 2020 on building things that are now coming into their next level. Some of this is going to look like shedding a skin. The next chapter is being built for the next 10 years to come.
Lora: What’s a recurring life theme you see in your readings right now (love, career pivots, endings, rebirth, boundaries), and how do you help people work with it instead of resisting it?
Michelle: Right now what I see most is people are shifting identities and capitalizing on new chapters in their life. There’s a lot of people saying, “I did this for the last 10 years, and now I’m seeing myself evolve in this more mature way.”
I feel a lot of us who got initiated during the 2017 to 2018 cycle are now stepping into leadership. There’s a more mature part of ourselves that is calling us forward. Old identities are shedding. It’s time for a pivot.
I have a philosophy in my work that says ‘everything that happens is for our healing’. So in order for people to not resist the changes that are occurring, it’s understanding that we must listen devotionally to the wisdom of life.
That is the practice of Surrender..
And especially in eclipse cycles or any kind of retrograde season or challenges to the year, it’s really an opportunity so that we can lay the path for the flowering, the fruitfulness. It’s like tilling the soil for the years to come.
