Friday night is TV night in my house, and our latest binge has been Widow’s Bay from Apple TV. The horror-comedy stars Matthew Rhys, who won my heart in The Americans, one of my favorite family dramas of all time. The things this man can do with his face to convey subtle emotions just blow me away — and that talent is on full display as Tom Loftis, mayor of a picturesque island that may or may not be haunted (it is).
This show has plenty of farce and scares to go around, but the storyline I’m most drawn to is the complicated relationship between Tom and his teenage son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick). Legend has it, if you were born on the island you can never leave, and if you try, you are doomed. Tom wasn’t born on Widow’s Bay; his son was.
On the surface, Tom’s concerns about Evan seem to be your average teen fare: recreational drug use, staying out past curfew, hanging out with troublemakers. But as the show evolves, it becomes clear that when Tom grounds his son and makes him stay at home, he is desperately trying to save him from a horrific fate.
This is something I think all parents can relate to. Especially parents of teens, who are becoming increasingly independent. We want to protect them from the dangers of the world. Ultimately, the best we can do is teach them to protect themselves as much as possible.
I know I’m going on about Matthew Rhys, but this is an A+ cast all around. Hope you enjoy the show as much as I do.
