In honor of our nation’s complicated 250th birthday, I want to recommend a podcast that acknowledges that complexity. Brooklyn Public Library’s podcast Borrowed & Returned is running a special 6-episode series featuring some of the most influential books in United States history. The series kicks off with “Jose Antonio Vargas Redefines America,” co-hosted by our very own production assistant, Virginia Marshall, who interviews Vargas about his memoir Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen.
Virginia asks such insightful questions in this episode — and she leads Vargas through his experience as a young child, sent from the Philippines by his mother to live with his grandparents in the U.S., and his discovery at sixteen that he was undocumented. My favorite part of the interview comes toward the end, when Vargas grapples with rebuilding a relationship with his own mother after over 30 years apart — while she navigates reconnecting with her mother, whom she hadn’t seen since she was a teenager.
