It’s always a little leap of faith to offer an online class I’ve never offered before.

It’s a bigger leap of faith to offer a class I’ve never seen offered anywhere: Pilates for the writer’s body.

During class every Wednesday, we’ll tend to three major areas of the writer’s body that exhibit routine discomfort.

  1. We’ll loosen the neck and un-hike the shoulders

  2. We’ll stretch our tight hips as well as those even tighter hamstrings

  3. We’ll invite the core to find new strength, extending ease to the lower back

It’s my mission to bring Pilates to as many bodies as possible. Whether or not you have given Pilates a try already, you are welcome in this class series.

Invitations to modify movements are plentiful in this three-week movement series, as are curious but optional inquiries about how we might challenge our bodies.

Class recordings will be available to stream for one week following each class!

Here’s how I describe Pilates: it’s a movement modality that emphasizes strength and alignment.

Part exercise, part rehabilitation, the original Pilates method was first developed for mat practice in the 1940s. Pictured above: Joseph Pilates demonstrating some of his original exercises in his book Return to Life through Contrology.

Don’t panic. We won’t be moving our legs like that in class.

Together in Write Moves, we’ll practice science-backed, inclusivity-minded versions of the original Pilates exercises.

A mat. That’s it! If you don’t have a mat, I recommend spreading a bath towel on a rug.

It’s entirely up to you. If you have your camera on, I’ll be able to watch your movements and offer suggestions. I will never require you to turn your camera on.

You’ll be automatically admitted into the Zoom room, where your microphone will be automatically turned off.

I’d love to chat with you! Reply to this email or leave a comment.

TONIGHT!

If our bodies felt better, what effect would that have on our creativity? If our attention wasn’t swallowed up by aches, pains, and other discomforts, where else could we place that attention?

Find out what Pilates can do for your writing practice. Starting tonight.

I started doing Pilates when a physical therapist suggested it for my chronic pain. It made all the difference. Now, I am on a mission to bring Pilates-inspired movement to more people.

I recently apprenticed with Queer Body Pilates in Brooklyn, NY and am completing my certification through Spring Movement, part of East River Pilates.
