The latest AI models absurdly capable if you know what to do with them. Claude Fable dropped today. As an experiment, I had it doing weeks of consulting work in an hour - until my rate limit ran out. (whaa whaa whaa) The other day, I spent the equivalent of $8 on compute on a one line prompt. Out came an investor prospectus, marketing playbook, and pitch deck before lunch with annotated market research to back it up. The good news - the technology works, when it’s leveraged correctly on the appropriate jobs.
But here’s the bad news - the financing doesn’t work. Mitch Feierstein (article below) calls it circular financing, where AI companies invest in each other to inflate valuations detached from actual revenue. Anthropic spent two months saying Mythos was too dangerous for public release, then quietly launched it today for the right price. It’s “free” until 6/22 for monthly subscribers. Then, even the monthly punters open the wallet for each query.
The days of all-you-can-eat AI subscriptions are ending. Anthropic’s new pricing sits at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. That’s half of what they charged for Mythos Preview, but it’s still a paywall.
Unfortunately, the “average” user’s first AI experience get cheap models with no reasoning, skewed training data, and safeguards that trigger constantly. High-end users get Codex, Fable, super-duper enhanced GPT version 1000. Are you a trusted partner with government clearance? Then you get the full Monty - Mythos 5 with guardrails lifted, ready to construct the next WMD or hacking tool.
The capital raises from foundation labs aren’t going to vanish quietly. I’ve seen this before, and this will correct. When valuations depend on circular investment rather than profit, the bill won’t go away. It’ll get socialized.
Taxpayers absorbed the 2008 crash. There’s no reason to expect different treatment for Silicon Valley’s AI gamble. 🤖💸

Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical calls for "disarming technology," warning against concentrated AI power in few hands and the erosion of human dignity, work, and truth. Meanwhile, research suggests much of the fiercest anti-AI sentiment online is actually being generated by AI itself. The Vatican wants human control. The bots are fighting back by pretending to hate themselves.
