For several years a Houston-based company has been trying to get all its permits in place to build an enormous renewable diesel refinery at Port Westward, near Clatskanie on the Columbia River Estuary. NXTClean Fuels sells itself as a leader in developing clean renewable fuels, but their product - renewable diesel - is hardly clean (or renewable) and in reality they don’t actually have a plan for what the feed stock for the product will be. Much of the community, especially farmers, are opposed to this project but it does have the support of local elected officials.
