some quick snapshots of the past two months (oops!) spent falling in love again (all things go, all things go) all while I was learning new colour systems and colour terminology in school (all things grow, all things grow)

This year’s snow day coincided with Hourly Comics Day and so Nicola and I spent all day at home doodling silly comics. We ventured out only once to get hotpot — bundled in many layers and in matching knitted balaclavas (mine pink, theirs neon orange). It was really beautiful to see the parking lot across from our window get blanketed by a perfect layer of snow, and seeing that progress from untouched to the footprint-dotted smiley face you see above. How many people did it take to create that image? Is every interaction with something beautiful you see outside just public art waiting to happen?

I decided to get a permanent body modification to cast away any doubts that I was anything less than Totally Serious and Totally Silly about colour at all times.

How blissful to be in love with someone who receives and encourages romance in abundance!! I surprised Nathan at the airport with a bouquet of flowers and a sign with their name on it sketched out in my notebook. The airport is a beautiful sight the day after Valentine’s — flowers and balloons and kisses — but maybe I’ve just never noticed it before? If you look up, you can see escaped balloons stuck to the ceiling by the power of helium, bright, colourful, spelling out welcome home.

a reminder, a sign, a save-point.

For something that looked so squishy and candylike, this was (un)surprisingly, anticlimactically terrible to the touch. But oh, what a glow!

I went on a trip to Bowen Island with Tenth Train and we spent an afternoon at two beautiful rocky beaches. I went up to the water and felt the tide hold my hands. I found many treasures that day, but that glowy luminous shard of ultramarine blue seaglass — the first ever bit of seaglass I’ve ever found — really takes the cake.

Jamie made my dreams come true with this stunning palette for Paige and I to craft earrings together!! These shapes and colours hold so much life, so much possibility!!

I was having a stressful day and needed some kind of reassurance (anything, please) that it was all going to be okay. I took a detour to the waterfront and turned to see this stairway randomly lit with a pinky-purple glow. I don’t know why. But I’m grateful to have witnessed it. I bathed in the light that night.

I think that’s my favourite thing about the transition period between winter and spring, too — it’ll feel really difficult and grey and gross, and all at once, bunches of crocuses will crop up out of nowhere, huddled close together like a community in bloom. These crocuses wilfully popped up from beneath a fence, right where the soil touches the pavement. A burst of brightness in an impossible situation.

Right as I snapped this photo, a stranger came up and complimented me, “I love all your pink!”

Pink like my favourite spring blooms —

— because spring is bursting with excitement, just around the corner!

Flowers are my annual reminder that the earth is coming back to life. I feel so lucky to have friends who will send me regular updates on magnolia trees (my favourite) and any other flower they encounter. There was one day where I received texts from three separate people about three separate magnolia trees blooming in three separate neighbourhoods. I felt so loved. (IT’S HAPPENING!!!)

Because flowers always feel like a wonderful surprise when I spot them hidden in nature. These lime green lichen-dusted rocks feel like the perfect backdrop to these tiny violet flowers. Can you spot them dotted amongst the thick green foliage?

And when I see them cupping the sunbeams like this, it reminds me that the days are looking up!

Look up!
