Back in the 2010s I was experimenting a lot more with how I drew comics. I was still publishing my minicomic, Jumbly Junkery, at the time, and was moving away from having literally everything in one of my Moleskine journals (although these days I’m back to mostly drawing comics in Moleskines b/c of portability reasons)
I was trying a lot of different things at the time, in particular drawing on different pieces of paper at different scales. Scaling up to see how that would work, instead of drawing large and scaling down, or instead of my usual drawing exactly to scale.The result was many one-off pieces that I enjoyed and still enjoy but that never turned into more than just what they were.
So here’s a small assortment of some of those comics. All of these appeared in some issues of Jumbly Junkery. I think some of these were in JJ9, JJ10, and JJ11… but I’m not entirely sure (I’ll do a deep dive into old Jumbly Junkery issues at some point…)
This one is somewhat small, maybe 5x7 or smaller. It’s ink + ink wash. This was me exploring using the nib and ink more — something I couldn’t do in the Moleskines because of bleeding through the pages.
This one is me exploring the nib some more but also with using whatever markers I had at hand to do the shading. I used the blue marker knowing that my final intention was grayscale, so I was curious how that was going to work.
I apparently never noticed the typo in this one. One of my personal challenges with these comics was to go direct to ink, never erase, and to just embrace what happened. Turns out… I have to embrace this very old typo on a comic I otherwise really like.
And then finally, this one. This comic was about Red Hook, Brooklyn after Hurricane Sandy. I was trying to use no ink on this one — only watercolor and pencil.
