Rodri to Real Madrid has been a rumour that has dominated the summer transfer window. In fact, the feeling for the majority of the last few months has been that Rodri wanted to join Real Madrid, with Florentino Pérez being the one who was unconvinced.
Therefore, it came as a surprise to most when news broke last week of Barcelona’s decision to pursue Rodri, and the World Cup Golden Ball winner’s desire to join the Blaugrana.
As recently as July 20, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Rodri ‘dreamed’ of joining Real Madrid, and the two parties have been in talks for some time now.
The potential transfer made perfect sense. Ever since the retirement of Toni Kroos in 2024, there has been a glaring void in Real Madrid’s team: someone to control the play in midfield. Where Real Madrid have fallen short in the last couple of years has been in the big games. Despite their star-studded attack, they have often looked second best and struggled to sustain long spells of possession in those games.
