In a moment, my new roommate will return from their smog check, for another kind of check-in: do we want to live together long term? I’ve been doing some magic in this house, but I could be doing a lot more.
This is an altar I set up on my floor in order to charge these sigils, which represents SOLIDARITY. I screen printed these and other patches as examples for the workshop I’m teaching this weekend at Riso Studio Arts, in downtown Los Angeles. Click here to register.
What's a sigil? Sigils are magic symbols that hold the power of a word or phrase. In my practice I use sigils to remind me of my intentions, condense and concentrate my will, and make things look cool. Sigils are flexible, fun, ancient technology and a great entry point for learning witch craft.
I was born into a community of witches and I've been leading and teaching magic since I was a teenager. I believe witch craft is something all of us can do, and sharing these tools beyond my home community is a large part of my work as an artist.
We can activate sigils in lots of different ways, by burning, melting, gifting them or making them into objects we keep for a long time. In this workshop we will print 12 copies of the sigil you design - giving you lots of opportunities to activate your sigil however you desire. We will talk a little about what it means to set intentions and cast spells, and we will create sacred space as a group to get the vibes right. No experience required :)

It’s really good to be back in Los Angeles. And destabilizing. Despite coming to the end of a four-year-nomadic-chapter (knock on wood) turns out it’s really hard to land on your feet. While I was traveling, one of the ways I coped with so much intense, rapid change was to shake my body a lot. Towards the end of the chapter, my friend Charly Heath and I made some of that shaking into a short expanded cinema piece. Safety Shakes premiered on December 30th last year, in Chicago. My bedframe just arrived. The delivery person was kind enough to bring it all the way up to our back house. I haven’t had my own bed since 2020. Sometimes, it’s magic enough to just sink in. I hope you get to relax your body today, even for a moment. Until next time <3
