Quick vibe check on American democracy: Mitch McConnell 84, seven terms, the Grim Reaper of the Senate, his words, not mine, was admitted to a hospital on June 14 and has not been seen by a single human eyeball since. His office won’t say why. Police scanner audio indicates paramedics performed CPR on an unconscious person at his address that morning; a neighbor filmed someone leaving on a stretcher. That video just leaked. And yet, the official line, reissued weekly like a hostage proof-of-life, is that he's "working closely with his staff." Cool. Cool cool cool. Several Republican senators have confirmed his condition via the famously unfalsifiable medium of "we talked on the phone." Okay….???
Meanwhile, he has missed votes on housing and on the war. It is day 26. And here is the thing nobody in Washington will say out loud: the mystery of where Mitch McConnell is happens to be the least interesting thing about this story.
The most interesting thing is what he’s getting while he’s gone, and the two words that explain why you will never, ever get it.
