Three of the most trusted names in alternative music coverage lost nearly their entire editorial staff this week. Not a slow fade. A gutting, executed in a single afternoon.
Veeps, the streaming platform Live Nation has quietly built into a full-blown media holding company, laid off almost every editorial staffer across BrooklynVegan, Alternative Press, Revolver, and Goldmine in one coordinated sweep. These aren’t fringe blogs nobody’s heard of. BrooklynVegan basically wrote the modern language of indie and DIY show coverage. Alternative Press has been chronicling scene culture since before most of its current readers were born. Revolver carried metal journalism through decades when almost nobody else took the genre seriously, and Goldmine has been the record collector’s bible since disco was still new. Four newsrooms. Same afternoon. Same corporate parent.
I’ll be straightforward about where I land on this: it matters more than almost anything else on this list, and it’s getting a fraction of the attention it deserves. When the company that already controls ticketing, touring, and venue access also owns the outlets covering the shows, something in the ecosystem stops functioning the way it’s supposed to. Independent music writing survives on thin margins even in a good year. Losing four outlets at once isn’t a rough patch. It’s a structural wound, and readers will feel the absence long after this week’s news cycle moves on.
It’s hard not to read that decision next to Live Nation’s other move this week, a finalized deal taking over three major venues in Prague, deepening its grip on the Central European touring circuit. A company expanding its footprint over where shows happen while shrinking the footprint of who gets to write about them isn’t a coincidence worth waving off. It’s a pattern. And patterns are how industries quietly reshape themselves while everyone else is busy buying tickets.
Not everything this week was about consolidation. Some of it was heavier than that. Hungary’s Ozora Festival closed early, one of the more significant gatherings on the psychedelic and tribal music circuit, after two attendees died on site. Festivals are supposed to be among the safer collective experiences music offers us. When that gets punctured, it deserves more than a passing mention, so we’ll sit with it rather than rush past: our thoughts are with everyone who was there and everyone who loved the people it took.
The share of fans telling Luminate that ticket prices feel out of hand dropped year over year in the platform’s mid-year live music report. Not because shows got cheaper. Because fans decided the price is worth paying anyway.
That’s the small but real signal buried in Luminate’s mid-year live music report. Big production tours are still winning the argument against people’s wallets, even in a year where everyone swears they’re being more careful with money. Make of that what you will. I read it as proof that a great live show remains one of the last purchases people refuse to talk themselves out of.
Chicago’s Riot Fest dropped its full schedule for its September 18 through 20 run at Douglass Park, and one booking decision is already lighting up group chats everywhere: Morrissey is slotted to open directly for Tool. I don’t think I need to explain why that’s funny. Two artists with wildly different relationships to their own audiences, sharing a stage back to back. Somebody in that booking office either has a great sense of humor or genuinely didn’t think it through, and honestly, either explanation makes me want to be there more.
Not everything onstage this week was good news. Billy Strings had to finish a set wearing a helmet after a fan launched an object at him mid-song. I’ll say the quiet part out loud: people throwing things at performers has stopped being a rare, shocking incident and started looking like a genuine pattern across live music, and it deserves to be treated as a real problem rather than a quirky headline. Strings finished the show. That doesn’t make it fine.
Closer to home, if the national picture swung between corporate consolidation and genuine tragedy this week, the run of shows hitting Philadelphia and South Jersey over the next couple of weeks looks almost defiantly good. This is a stretch worth actually building your month around.

Put it all together and this was one of those weeks that makes covering live music feel like holding two different truths at once. The infrastructure behind the scenes took a real hit this week, the kind that changes what coverage looks like for years, not just this news cycle. And yet the actual machinery of touring, the trucks, the marquees, the box offices, kept running at full volume like nothing happened. Both of those things are true at the same time. I’m not going to pretend they resolve neatly into a bow.
