IN TODAY’S FILED & SENT, I’m recapping all of the Live a Little stories and experiences from the month of July. I’ll share data-backed insights from the top-clicked releases, outfits, recommended reads, and more.
Some life notes of what I was up to this month: My parents and brother came to visit and we all went and saw Willie Nelson at his annual July 4th picnic. Seeing Willie play on stage at the age of 93 was inspiring. The same goes for seeing Billy Strings rip on the guitar in the set prior. Sharing a day like that with my family filled me with gratitude.
The rest of July was spent enjoying the Austin summer. I wrote a lot at Cherrywood Coffehouse. I watched a ton of World Cup matches, specifically at the Dead Rabbit pub on 6th street and then at Buenos Aires Cafe in the East 6th neighborhood. I made multiple trips to Barton Springs. Had one damn-good steak dinner at Steiner Ranch Steakhouse. Stopped in for a few happy hours at Still Austin, where they have a frozen Cold Fashioned drink deal that’s half-off before 5pm during the week.
I’m missing a bunch of other fun moments, but the gist is I found a lot of goodness in a time of year when many are trying to leave the city and escape the heat.
As always, every Filed & Sent includes an exclusive story. For June, it was the Easy 30-Minute Workout Making Me Bulletproof. For May, it was the James Bond “007 First Light” Gear Guide. In April, it was the 12 Coffee Shops Every Writer Should Visit. In March, my Las Vegas Shortlist of Places to Visit.
For this month’s issue, I’m talking about some healthy food staples that stay in my diet year-round. Nutrition is core to the Live a Little lifestyle. Not only does eating healthy maximize gains made in the gym, but it also helps put your body on the offensive towards illness and the elements, as opposed to always being in defense.
I’ll save the larger Live a Little approach to eating for a future issue, but understand the core ethos of it all is to follow an 80/20 diet. That means 80% of the time, I’m staying close to my rules and eating healthy. The remaining 20% of the time, I’m allowing myself to eat a burger and fries, or indulge in some cookies or a pecan waffle from Waffle House.
With that all being said, here’s my shortlist of healthy foods I’m always eating.
