I stumble to the middle,
Laughing, fumble over stones,
Little ripples, double, triple,
Wrinkled light and pearls of foam.
River water, dark and deeper,
Presses coldly on my bones,
Sets it feet against the boulders,
Pushes knee joints, ah!, I groan.
Onward, onward, from the mountains,
Resting never, never slowed,
Like the sidewalk in the city,
Like the Business People Crowd.
Anchored ankles holding bravely,
Though I stand waist-deep, aslant.
I defy the rushing forward,
Slap my palms down with a “Shan’t!”
I will not be swept downriver!
I will not be made to rush!
I will plant my feet like granite;
I will drag one “v” of hush.
Let the waters power round me;
Let the world run to be first;
I’ll be hunkered here unmoving,
As a quiet stone immersed.
