Sometimes the best thing you can do with a difficult thought is nothing.
Not forever. Not avoidance. Just five minutes.
When emotions are high, a decision feels urgent, or your mind is trapped inside the same problem, continuing to think can create the illusion that you are getting closer to an answer. In reality, you may simply be looking at the same situation from the same emotional position.
A short period of distance can change that. Walking away, becoming quiet, changing your physical surroundings, or shifting your attention briefly can give the brain an opportunity to reduce the intensity surrounding the problem.
The remarkable part is that you don’t always need hours of reflection to gain perspective.
Sometimes five minutes is enough to stop reacting to the problem and start seeing it.
