Arjun’s Ascent: The Archery Legend Begins | Mahabharata Series - Episode 16

His legacy of bravery and astute leadership continues to inspire us, and it is only fair that we take a moment to honour such a remarkable individual. Let’s continue with our Mahabharata series and reveal the next exciting episode!

Episode 16: Arjun, in Gurukul: In Gurukul (गुरुकुल), where destiny frequently combined with talent, one student stood out in his determined search for excellence—Arjun (अर्जुन). Our protagonist was more than just a student; he was a teacher's pet. Arjun followed his instructor, Dronacharya (द्रोणाचार्यः), wherever he went, day or night. Their friendship was unique, filled with respect, ambition, and a tangible desire to learn.

However, the dynamics within the Gurukul were not fair. Dronacharya, although giving his great knowledge to the Kuru princes (कुरु राजपुत्राः), also had a unique bias: his son, Ashwatthama (अश्वत्थमा). Yes, friends, we are discussing some classic OG nepotism! Consider this scenario: a parent wants the best for his son during a coming war. Clearly, the Kuru cousins were bound to conflict, and Drona reasoned that arming his kid with remarkable skills would help him survive. He had no idea that Ashwatthama's fate would take him on an unforeseen journey to immortality! However, the desire for power and perpetual life frequently comes with a twist, which, as we will see later, proves to be a curse rather than a benefit. Anyway, let us not get ahead.

Now, back to Arjun! His dedication forced Dronacharya to reluctantly accept him and the other princes in the teachings. Every day was a lesson in perseverance and enthusiasm for Arjun. Until one evening, Dronacharya discovered something quite remarkable: Arjun was quietly practising archery at night, launching arrows at a target in the dark. Dronacharya was surprised and inquisitive, so he asked him why he was practising in such low light.

Arjun replied with a simple but profound logic: "If I can eat my food in the dark, why can't I shoot my arrows?" Oh, the entitlement! This little hero could think beyond the box!

And as the days passed, destiny threw a frightening curveball. Dronacharya was unexpectedly attacked by a crocodile one tragic day, while they were gathered on the river bank. The other students stood transfixed in shock, but not Arjun. Without hesitation, he grabbed his bow and discharged arrows, skilfully saving his teacher's life. Consider the scene: a young warrior, bold and steadfast, comes to the aid of his beloved guru. I mean, if you save your teacher's life, doesn't a 100/100 seem like a reasonable reward? That makes excellent sense!

In recognition of Arjun's valiant act, Dronacharya gave him a powerful chant to summon a celestial weapon known as the Brahmastra weapon (ब्रह्मास्त्र अस्त्रम्). This was no ordinary gift; it was a weapon capable of annihilating entire civilisations if unleashed on lower entities such as humans. Imagine the enormity of that power! Dronacharya promised that Arjun would become the best archer the world had ever seen.

This event not only marked a watershed moment in Arjun's life but also laid the groundwork for one of the most well-known moral parables taught to all Indian children. It teaches us that devotion, respect, courage, and the power of education can change someone's life in unimaginable ways.
