Happy Thursday, writers!

“Let’s talk poetry over a meal.” This Sunday, August 16th, Karen Zheng will return to Literary Liberation to lead a new workshop with us centered around food memory. Not all memories tied to food are nostalgic, so don’t be intimidated to join for fear of writing your truth. Eating Our Poems: Writing About Food will be recorded, so if you want to join, but can’t make the time, no worries! You will have unlimited access to the recording for 60 days.

👀 A reminder email with your Zoom access link will be sent 24 hours before the start of the class.

What made you want to teach this particular workshop at this moment?

I’ve always loved food, and it’s such an easy thing for strangers to immediately connect over. We definitely need more deep connections in this particular moment in time, so let’s talk poetry over a meal.

UPDATE:
We’ve sold out of our discounted seats! We now have spots available at the member (paid subscriber) and non-member (everyone else) rates.

“It’s important to think about not just the food and the act of eating the food, but everything that comes with it, which is the preparation of the food, and also thinking about where these ingredients are coming from, who grows them, whose hands it passes through.” —
Karen Zheng

We all have a relationship to food.

Food is one of the stronger sensory vehicles that is truly democratic. Culturally and socioeconomically what our memories hold can differ greatly, but it is something we all share. All five senses are actively engaged in food memory. It bypasses the normal thinking part of our brain and instantly transports us to memories, sometimes tender and sweet, other times harrowing or embittered, and other times still, erotic.

Who is this workshop especially for (and who might need it most)?

This workshop is for those who love food, love to eat, love to write reviews of food, and love to have fun!

Cost: members $79 - non-members $99
Class Size Limit: 15

Paid subscribers automatically take 20% off our workshops (our member rate). Scroll down to the bottom of this post to register or become a Community Member or Studio (+) Member.

Hey there! Are you visiting us for the first time? Are you one of our followers, but not yet a subscriber? Subcribing is free and amazing. Paid subscribers get all the benefits. Whichever you choose, we’re glad you’re here.

Karen Zheng will be leading Eating Our Poems: Writing About Food with us this Sunday, August 16 at 11a ET. Dive deep into how we relate to food in our bodies and on the page.

In this course, I will be taking you all on a journey to examine the relationship between food and our bodies, our love, our emotions, and our world through the discussion of three poems from Jane Wong , Nikki Giovanni, and Kemi Alabi. Their work will touch on craft topic such as the prose poem, the use of ellipses, the use of litany, the use of questions, and the volta. Each poem’s form and techniques will inspire a specific prompt for us to write on. In the end, we will share our work with each other.
