Every year I try to take time away from work during the month of August, and outside of showing up for our Monday Park & Write each week, I plan on doing the same this year. It’s important to me to spend the final weeks of summer engrossed in my family outside of the house and away from screens. There will be scheduled posts published throughout the month and I will be checking in with Sentence Club.

If you joined us last Friday, or read anything from us in the last month, you know that we’ve officially begun Sentence Club! If this is the first time you’re noticing it, you are not behind. This isn’t a typical bookclub. You have three months to read, but you should also be doing the work. We will be in contact with you throughout the whole process.

August is a great many things: Black August, Black Business Month, Black Music Month, so this is an invitation to upgrade/manage your membership at any time to join the conversation, or give the gift of Lit Lib to someone who needs it.

We will be back next month with a call for 2027 instructors, tons of new interviews, we’ll continue on with Sentence Club and everything else we have going on. Make sure you register for our workshops—we’ve moved to hosting one each month and our first one happens August 16. More below!

Have the summer you need and want.

  • We’ll have our regular Park & Write rooms this month. We meet every Monday, every other Wednesday and every Friday. If something in the schedule changes, we will send a message in the chat. When you sign up, you have access to all sessions.

  • Sentence Club officially started on August 1st! If you missed our kickoff on Friday, you can watch the replay here. Order Writing Down the Bones, read the Sentence Club introduction post, and plan your calendar around our first post: “Trust Your Words, Trust Your Stories, Trust What You Have to Say.”

  • Every month we publish a free Community Prompt and the first 3 free subscribers to respond to the prompt in that first week gets 3 months of full access free. This is only open to free subscribers and each person can receive it once.

  • Send us your very best work! We are accepting essays for Freedom Ways and essays, interviews, and more for general submissions. Make sure you read the guidelines thoroughly for publication (it’s something that’s mentioned often and also often overlooked.) We pay $150 for essays and $50 for columns.

We’ve also created a Reparations Fund. We’re always thinking of new ways to provide educational, publication, and grocery support opportunities to members of the global majority. We offer multiple options for reparative engagement. More than anything, today stands as a reminder of all that was stolen from us and all that is owed.
