The organization only invites decent people and sometimes big BIG stars teach a class (Elizabeth Strout substituted for Stewart O’Nan one year, and my first year, I was in Stewart O’Nan’s workshop!) and even when they aren’t household names, they are fabulous writers and teachers. Lots of the faculty members have had movies made from their books. Sometimes, possibly their most famous writer alumnus, Dennis Lehane, comes by to chat.
St. Petersburg is a gay-friendly art town with remarkable theatre, galleries, museums, restaurants, and a very, very cool ecosphere (manatees, anyone?) The campus too is gorgeous, right on the beach, and the conference provides a shuttle back and forth from the hotel to the campus and that saves a lot of money and annoyance. Cool special events, contests, talks. The weather is chilly at night but a huge break from say the North in January!
