Still from the American film Motherhood (1917) with Marjorie Rambeau. No prints remain. It’s considered a “lost film.” Of course it is.

This post by Lyz Lenz called “We need more scary moms” is fantastic and should be read by every mom. It’s a tribute to the blogger Jill Smokler but it’s so much more.

“Your motherhood takes over your whole identity. That is, until your motherhood is an inconvenience to how people want to see you — then your motherhood becomes incidental. A woman’s identity works like that. Motherhood is a halo, until it’s a boot on your neck.”

“Crap! Nothing ever changes, does it?”

“But being a parent means many things, one of which is that I cannot always be the selfish mess I want to be. This makes me a better person, but it is also oh so hard, when your eyes are tired and your back aches. You don’t need to know this now. And when you do need to know it, you will understand. But I want to apologize just so you know that I’m trying my very best, even when some days that best is a wreck.”

“I don’t have days like this anymore. I got a divorce, so I don’t have to hide my pain from my children or anyone in my house. Where I live is not a place of pretending. I’ve worked hard to make it that way. And I credit so much to those early days when I learned what honesty looked like on the page and figured out what it could look like in my life.

Once you start telling the truth, you have to live the truth. It's awful and beautiful like that.”

Holy moly. I feel like I wrote that but I know I didn’t. Sister from another mister. Lover from another mother. Badass from a gladass? More stupid euphemisms because fuck it I’m high on words again.

I don’t do this. It’s a metaphor, people.
