Small excerpts from CH 7, “Having Drifted” from THIS FANTASTIC STRUGGLE: THE LIFE & ART OF ESTHER PHILLIPS.

These appear toward the very end of the chapter, just before the next section of the book, entitled “The Institution."

It refers to the end of the WPA work— Works Progress Administration that Franklin Delano Roosevelt established during the Depression, a real godsend to give work to professional artists. And as well to Sara Via Pais’ “unassailable self” previously referred to in the book. Here, part of Pages 103 & 104:
