horsey hats

I made hats, they look like this:

And also stickers, like so:

And both are in my shop now. You do not need to buy anything ofc, I’m just giving subscribers a heads up before I slap ‘em on instagram.

More hat talk:

These hats were made by Press Friends and it was a really fun process!

First I chose a hat. I wear a lot of baseball hats and I’m picky about them. Most are too small; they don’t cover enough of the skull. Or the fabric is poor quality. I want something that will last a long time and look good. These organic cotton ones are super nice.

Then I had to finesse the design — my initial attempt looked okay in photoshop:

But I wasn’t happy with how all my fussy details looked in the digital proof:

Check out those eyelashes! I use the word “crunchy” whenever this happens in a design for animation — whenever there’s too much black line detail and it’s all mushing together? It’s crunchy.

But that’s okay, that’s what proofs are for.

I tried the little bow a bunch of different ways and ultimately decided to ditch it! I simplified my design, then got a physical proof:

I wanted some thinner details, and to tweak the colors a bit. I looked at thread swatches to choose specific hues:

And got a new sample, which was approved:

I really enjoy this… working with a professional and learning about a production process while going back and forth to perfect something. And then I get high on my own supply:

I’d love to make more wearables. Shirts??? Someday.
