We have lost the plot.
As human beings, we have evolved enough that we could be doing amazing things like:
Feeding and housing everyone in the world.
Spending more time as artists, craftspeople, writers, hobbyists, and so on while enriching our lives through all of the arts.
Treating our environment with respect for every living being and every aspect of this beautiful world.
Exploring, learning, and enriching our lives.
Discovering things we do not yet fully understand.
Caring, loving, laughing, and recognizing that our lives are rich with diverse peoples, ideas, and cultures.
But no. Instead, we have become our own worst enemies. We have chosen over and over again the path to self-destruction or progress for progress’ sake with no regard for how it will affect our humanity.
The worst part is that those in power claim to be doing it in the name of God. I don’t usually talk about religion here, because it is a personal thing. I respect those who have true faith. But I realized recently that the hypocrites in power, the Christo-fascists trying to take over, and the extremists from any religion whatsoever all have one thing in common. They either think they have a direct line to their deity or they have decided to redefine their religion so they become gods themselves.
I want to emphasize here that, of course, I am not saying “All ______” (fill in the group of your choice).
But the evidence is clear. If Jesus were alive, he would never condone what is happening to the USA right now. He would probably tell his followers that they are worshipping false idols and greed. He would probably be speaking out against the fascist takeover of our government. (I say probably because I don’t know what any god truly thinks).
But that’s not the real issue. As I mentioned, we have evolved to a point where we shouldn’t have to be working so hard just to feed and house our families. But, I believe that the systems in play have made humans think that they are equal to their perception of God.
The systems that we live by have gone to the heads of those who crave the power of the gods. For example
The patriarchal desire of men (not all men) to put themselves above anybody else has led to a world where they ignore the needs of anyone of any race/culture/gender that does not fit their definition of a powerful man.
The greedy system of capitalism has placed money on the altar, built a world of golden calves, and refuses to acknowledge that every human has the right to shelter, food, education, and safety.
The egotistical technology industry has embraced the idea that all that matters is making things faster and “easier” without even thinking about what happens to humans when technology takes over. This could be all right if this technology freed up time for more of those good things (like creativity, exploration, learning, etc.) But no, they want us to work harder, faster, and more for less money while taking away all the things that make us human. They want to become gods who replace us with technology, leaving us nothing.
Is this not men claiming the power of gods? Doesn’t that go against the teachings of religion?
The combination of these three systems will lead us to self-destruction if we don’t reconnect with the good aspects of humanity, and the time is now.
“When one reaches absolute power, one loses total contact with reality.”
—Gabriel García Marquez
I believe that power does not have to corrupt. Some powers would fulfill my dream of a more humane world and enrich the reality of what it means to live in a world that does not belong solely to us. What are they?
