The Anti-Pride Bigots are Playing Stupid Games

Lindsey Weidenbach · How to be a Difficult Woman

I pulled the nine of swords today, people. We about to fuck shit up in here. Because I am thoroughly pissed off at a whole bunch of ya’ll that live near me. Let’s get into it.

Backstory: The City of Wenatchee created a flag policy whereby citizens could turn in an application to have flags up on light poles around the city. I believe this was created for the purpose of Pride month, June, but don’t quote me on that. Dominick Bonny, a local investigative reporter, has been following the story, and here is one of his posts on the topic if you want the full rundown.

No sooner than 180 days before you want the flags flown, you turn in the application with the fee and a drawing of the flags or a sample or some shit like that. The applicant has to be a nonprofit under IRC 501(c) and it’s on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The first year that the City flew the flags for Pride, the bigots were pissed. And before you start to tell me that homophobia is biblical, my brother in Christ, go fact-check yourself. If someone’s mere existence is against your beliefs systems, you a bigot. No two ways to slice it.

A pride banner from previous years

AND, haven’t we all had Tik-Tok long enough to know that the translation adding the word “homosexuals” to the Bible wasn’t printed until the 1946? That wasn’t in the original translation for almost two thousand years, it was added as a way to shun the gay community and now the bigots use it to justify their bigotry. Ya’ll gotta quit with the Bible stuff.

So, back to my original point. The Wenatchee Pride board of directors submitted their application per usual and was shocked to learn that someone had mysteriously been able to submit their application as well, behind the Pride board in time, but the City said the application that Pride submitted was incomplete. Meaning, the Pride board’s application was denied and someone else’s was accepted.

That “someone else” is none other than some dipshit from Turning Point USA. The banners to be flown during pride month will now say “Freedom” and “America’s Family Month.” The artwork was commissioned through Vector College, which I believe is a non-accredited “school” here in the valley ran by a cult church called Grace City Church. Which is not a 501(c) entity.

Vector College/TPUSA banner that will be flown in June

You may be asking yourself, couldn’t Vector College have picked a different month to fly their banners?

Exactly.

Any other month. Any other time.

But they chose June as an act of oppression and to try and silence Wenatchee’s gay community.

The City has undergone an onslaught of backlash and despite the outcry from the public, is still planning on flying “America’s Family Month” banners made by Christian Nationalists during the month of June. Yippee.

So I’m not here to debate whether the flags should be flown or how the City has handled the situation. It’s all pretty fucked up. What I’m here to do is take away Mother’s Day. If they want Pride month, I want at least one day to celebrate my beliefs and it just so happens that I’ve chosen to celebrate such beliefs on what was formerly known as Mother’s Day. This is an imperfect comparison for many reasons, but it’s the best I could come up with.

I’ve decided to choose one random Sunday in May, picked just because it’s a good time of year to celebrate and for no other reason, and I proclaim such day to be “Childless Women’s Day.”

Oh, that’s Mother’s Day? Too fucking bad, Cindy.

Could I have chosen another day? Sure.

Could any other Sunday in any other month have been usurped? Of course.

But the point of choosing Mother’s Day is to take it away from mothers and celebrate my way of life instead. (Not that being gay is a choice, or a way of life, or a belief system, but you should be getting my point).

Now on this of all holy days, instead of taking one day to have mothers under the spotlight, we shall celebrate those of us who decided against procreating.

The childless women of America will make their own breakfast or go out for brunch. They will get flowers and lay them at their own feet. All Mother’s Day cards will be replaced with “Childless Women” cards and no mentions of children or mothers shall be henceforth utter on this, the most holiest of Sundays.

We will fly banners that denounce having children and spread our childless propaganda for all to hear. We will dance in the streets, wave signs and encourage the youth of today to forgo motherhood and fatherhood and instead live a life without children.

If RFK, Jr. was worried about the declination of the nuclear family before, he’ll think it a crisis when I’m through with it.

Because my choices and my lifestyle should be everyone’s lifestyle and choices. I not only want to shove my belief system down the throats of Americans everywhere, but I want to do it in a way that will ban anyone from celebrating their own choices and their own lives on that very same day. You must now adhere to my way of life, and no one else’s.

Oh, you want to have kids? You were called from a young age and it’s just in your DNA to want a family?

Not on my watch.

Families are offensive to my beliefs, which we’ve already established are superior to all who oppose me, and my only way to fight the oppression against my beliefs is to take away the day that celebrates what I personally do not believe in.

Now that I have your attention….

Do you see how fucking stupid that sounds?

And for the record I would never take away Mother’s Day. It’s called satire, folks. Look it up.

Why.

My only question is why.

Why do you have to take someone else’s joy away because it’s not fitting within your belief system? Why demand these banners be flown in June? What the hell is the problem with July or August for fuck’s sake?!

Let’s just, for sake of argument, ignore that the Bible was reprinted with a new and homophobic translation that was purposefully made to thwart the rising gay community. Let’s just bypass that fact and say that the Bible is against the gays. It’s not, but humor me.

I STILL DON’T GET IT.

Because if your belief system says a certain thing, it doesn’t mean the rest of us have to have abide by it. You don’t think being gay will let a person get to heaven?

Cool. You go think that. But it doesn’t make it true and it doesn’t mean the gay community shouldn’t be allowed to celebrate. Especially during the month the City degreed to be Pride Month.

I didn’t have children and you don’t see me campaigning for everyone around me to not have children. Okay, maybe once or twice but I’m certainly not leading a cult with that as my backbone, core belief.

These scared, loud, oppressive humans think that flying a “Family Month” banner will stop people from celebrating Pride month.

It will not.

I will party harder. I will wear more rainbows just to piss you off. I will fly my Pride flag higher and prouder than ever before.

I didn’t want this fight, but you’ve brought it to my front door.

And just when I thought things were getting more inclusive, more progressive and moving in the right direction, the small dick posse at GCC swoop in to make me remember why we had a Robert E. Lee Elementary School until recently. And how the KKK was allowed to march in the Apple Blossom parade a mere 50 or so years ago.

This valley was changing for the better but I fear it’s slipping. Trump’s America is thriving here in Wenatchee with the help of GCC and the separation between Church and State is eroding.

We are not a Christian nation. We are not a Christian valley. We are human beings who deserve dignity and the freedom to live without oppression. Vector College and GCC could have chosen any other month to celebrate America’s Family Month, whatever that means. As if that excludes gay families. But they chose June to oppress our gay community. And I will not stand idle by and not, at the very least, complain about it.

So I’m doing what I do best. Using this platform to vent about how unendingly stupid this is and complain about it. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Time to sage my work space of all of this energy.

Remember, stay difficult and always question authority.
