You Thought You Found Intellectual Intimacy. You Found Intensity.

There’s a particular kind of person who enters your life like weather.

You talk until 3 a.m. and it doesn’t feel like talking. It feels like falling, except upward, into something. They finish your thoughts before you’ve located them yourself. They send you a voice memo about an idea at midnight and you listen to it three times. You leave every conversation buzzing, replaying specific lines, already composing the next exchange in your head before you’ve fallen asleep.

You tell your friends: I’ve never met anyone like this. They just get it. They get me.

Then, at some point, usually months later, you’re sitting with the wreckage of it. Maybe they pulled away the second you showed them something unresolved about yourself. Maybe you’re still together, technically, but you’ve started noticing that you only bring them the parts of your life that make sense. Maybe you’re lying awake replaying the whole thing, trying to understand how someone who understood you so completely could leave you feeling so alone.

I want to gently suggest something. You weren’t wrong about what you felt. You were wrong about what it meant. You were mistaking intensity for intellectual intimacy. That mistake is easy to make, hard to notice from inside it, and expensive when it finally comes due.
