There’s a number nobody talks about in job interviews. It’s the number of hours your job actually costs you once you factor in everything that happens around it: the commute, the decompression time, the wasted weekend, the fried brain that can’t hold a conversation by Wednesday.

For neurocomplex adults, this number is almost always bigger than we admit, even to ourselves. We’ve been trained, by employers, by hustle culture, by our own masking reflexes, to count only the eight hours on the schedule. Everything else gets filed under “just how I am” or “I guess I’m lazy” or “why can’t I keep up like everyone else.”

You’re not lazy. You’re doing unpaid labor that never shows up on a pay stub.

Let’s actually measure it.
