How to Search for Anything

·

December 28, 2025

How do you bridge the gap from an empty search bar to the treasures you know are out there? It's the number one question I hear from friends who want to shop places like Etsy, eBay, TRR, 1stDibs, and Facebook Marketplace, but don't know where to start. It can be overwhelming— the sheer volume of results, the inconsistent quality. There are millions of items, and algorithms only show you a tiny set, their best guess at what might interest you in order to reduce decision fatigue. I've been a merchandiser at Etsy for over a decade. That experience has taught me how to navigate marketplaces—how to shortcut to the best stuff, how to uncover newness, how to surface interesting rabbit holes. I've truly mastered the art of searching and want to help you do the same. Yes, it's part of my job, but it's absolutely a learnable skill.
