My mother was born in Newfoundland. Irish English. Newfoundland didn’t join Canada until 1949. My mother née Anne Emerson married my Norwegian father in 1948 in St. John’s, her home town.
My mother was very poetic and literary. And very beautiful, like Kamala. Mummy used to dance a lot, like Kamala. She had so many funny expressions, like “I never thought in a million years…” or “Let’s not and say we did..” when she decided not to go to an event or some activity that felt obligatory and not that much fun.
Anne Emerson Holt 1960 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, where she moved when my father got his first Big Job and Only Job.
People are sayin’ the problem with Kamala is that she laughs too much and is “too smart for her britches”, as Mummy used to say. I highly doubt that my mother and Momala see this as a problem!
One of my mother’s other great expressions was “When he opens his mouth, his brains fall out!” JD Vance and Donald Trump could take note.
