UK: PinkNews has a breakdown on new PM Andy Burnham’s pretty positive record on LGBTQ rights. Among looming challenges: passing a long-promised trans-inclusive conversion therapy ban, and finding a way to protect trans people amid a general rise in hostility toward trans people among the British public.
One upcoming challenge will be a petition to be debated in Parliament in September to amend surrogacy laws to automatically recognize intended parents, so that they don’t have to spend months in court and thousands of pounds adopting their own children.
Meanwhile, the Gibraltar Parliament passed a pair of bills to ban conversion therapy and add protections for “transgender identity” to existing hate crime and hate speech laws. Somewhat awkwardly, it seems it’s still not legally possible for trans people to update their legal gender. Nevertheless, if Gibraltar got a separate entry on the ILGA Rainbow Map index, this might actually have been enough to put it ahead of the UK.
