Join me this next week as I talk about estrangement with adult children.

ESTRANGEMENT

Es·trange·ment /əsˈtrānjm(ə)nt/ noun

An act of parting ways or breaking up.

If you are walking in this in your family right now, you will want to join us all week long. If you have friends walking this out, you will want to connect them to us. If you have littles are this is a non-issue, you will want to pay attention so you can avoid the pitfalls many families have fallen into.

I AM talking about adult children (18-marriage) who have suddenly and abruptly cut off their family and are going ‘no contact to protect their peace.’

I AM talking about a sudden cutting off that leaves the family crippled in a spiritual attack.

I AM talking about the trend of this younger generation to alienate themselves from everyone who loves them.

I AM talking about the younger generation who has received wicked counsel that slamming the door on family is healthy.

I AM talking about parents who live with an ache that has rendered them powerless and in a riptide of pain.

I AM talking about adult children who have abandoned all that they have known for a lifestyle that is steeped in darkness and wickedness.

I AM NOT talking about estrangement as it relates to abuse, deeply wounded individuals, or healthy boundaries that need to be put in place for the relationship to remain in tact.

These are the words used to describe estrangement:

Separation, division, breach, divorce, parting, rupture, disunity, break up, severance, distance, withdrawal, disgruntlement, disassociation, disregard, leaving, removal, falling out, alienation, detachment, rift, dissension, rejection, exclusion, desertion, black balling, shunning, isolation, avoidance, blacklisting, denouncing, casting off, cold shouldering, shutting out, forsaking, abandonment.

2 Timothy 3 - “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power.

A prodigal is defined as someone who no longer gives God His rightful, high place and ceases to give Him praise. The prodigal journey is 100% about the person’s relationship with God. It is not about the child/parent relationship, despite the deep ache and concern it brings to their hearts. It is important for parents to keep their minds and hearts in alignment with God as their child is walking through their journey with Him.

Prodigals, those who have reduced God, can still engage with their parents, come home for Christmas, and, although perhaps strained, can still maintain family relationships on some level.

The estrangement that we are seeing from children with their parents today is not the typical prodigal journey, nor is it because the child needs a safe space from legitimate danger. It is a much more calculated and diabolical scheme of the enemy in these last days to separate children from their parents. The last chapter of the Old Testament ends with a promise of Malachi 4:6 that He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents.

It warrants the question: what on earth turned the natural heart’s desires of a child away from their own parents?

One in four parents is dealing with this profound assault on their family unit, leaving them feeling devastated, crushed, and grieving a living child. It is my desire to expose more of what is going on in the spiritual realm and empower parents to receive healing for their souls, strength for their minds, and realign them back in their authority as God designed.

An influencer on social media sums up estrangement in this way:

There is a dangerous idea quietly spreading through our culture. It doesn’t announce itself as rebellion. It presents itself as wisdom. It wears the language of health, boundaries, and self-care. The idea is this: if a relationship causes discomfort, it’s abusive. If someone disappoints you, they’re toxic. If your parents fail to meet your emotional needs perfectly, you are justified in cutting them out of your life entirely. That idea is not only false; it’s destructive. It’s dismantling families, eroding resilience, and hollowing out a generation’s ability to endure relationships. And what makes it especially dangerous is that it often borrows therapeutic language while contradicting Biblical truth. The Bible doesn’t say we have a ministry of removal. It says we have a ministry of reconciliation. Cut-off culture isn’t Biblical. It’s convenient. Some people stay unhealed because they cut off the very relationships God wants to use to heal them.

  • Do you love your child?

  • Do you care about their well-being?

  • If you were aware of something you did to hurt them, would you want to make it right and ask for forgiveness?

  • Are you willing to hear where they are at and make adjustments?

If yes, then this is not your doing. This is their choice and something that has happened to you. This level of attack is designed so YOU feel responsible and begin to question what is so wrong with you that makes you so awful that your own child doesn’t want to be with you. It leaves the child orphaned without parents, and the parents consumed in so much pain and agony shrink back and lay down their authority. THAT is the attack. It is an attack to destroy family. It is an attack to steal inheritance.
