Hello and happy Monday. It has been a minute. And I have missed writing about food and feelings and books and all the things quite a bit. Spring got away from me. It really did. I honestly hate when people say they were “really busy”. Everyone picks their priorities and what you focus on is mostly up to you. I honestly aim to never say those words, and even more than that, have the where with all to raise my hand if it gets to busy and change things up so that won’t be the case.
Lately it feels like people are using more words like that: busy, heavy, hectic, non stop, and the list goes on. And I get it, I really do. Life feels full, and not sure if this has amped up this past spring in LA-who am I kidding, i know it has-but I tend to feel like I am missing out on something important, or there is something I should be doing that I’m not at all hours of the day. And it absolutely stresses me out. Like whoever can cram more from their to do list into a day wins. But here is the thing, no matter how much you cram in there is always more to cram in. And more after that.
I’ve really been trying so hard to lean the other way, make my priorities and let everything else take care of itself. But honestly it feels weird here because there is a vibe that you should always be busy, always going somewhere, off to the next thing! But honestly, to what end? For me though….. I’ve realized, It’s really a matter of wanting to feel a bit lighter, to take everything a lot less seriously, and to smile and laugh more. To fit more lightness into the margins of every day. Life shouldn’t feel heavy, of that I am sure.
I did make a promise to myself to never take any day for granted after my health scare this past year and to add more fun in always. Not to take life so seriously. I have no idea why I got a good outcome and many people don’t get that same good news. How can I not just squeeze all the juice out of the orange at every chance I get?
I saw my daughters gearing up for their last few months of high school. And there was all the fun things seniors do, a retreat, a night time trip to Disney Land, senior pranks….and I can’t help thinking I want them to use those as a bit of a roadmap as they go out into the world, a model of how to have fun moments always. And I have tried to model that too, a lot. We do goofy things like waving at every person we encounter on the way home from school (and I mean a big enthusiastic wave!), singing and a bit of dancing in the grocery store too! I broke into a bit of a dance somewhere between the pickles in aisle 2 and the yogurt 3 rows over. Because life happens and no one is going to make sure you enjoy it, that is totally up to you. Sometimes you have to go grab your joy.
I went to a concert with one of my daughters recently. We had dessert before the concert, the gorgeous Tiramisu pictured above from one of the loveliest restaurants ever called Donna’s. (I have nothing but amazing memories from that place because I also had dinner there with one of my very best friends.) Anyway, after much dancing we also had dessert after the concert, churros….soaked in brown sugar and absolutely delicious. And I think I am just fine being a person who goes out dancing and eats two desserts and has lighthearted fun doing it all. I’m grabbing my joy and never letting it go.
xo,
Lesli
