The following are notes from the workbook edition of The Way of Trust. These notes wrap up our time with Mark 3:1-6 and are designed to help you engage more deeply with the biblical text and your own story.
Jesus never said follow other Christians. He said, follow Me.
Christians ruining Christianity does not make Christianity untrue. It makes Christians human, desperately in need of the very grace they claim to represent.
The church is not a system that should not have hurt you. It is a room full of wounded people, including you, learning to stop wounding one another.
The church is a hospital, not a courthouse.
You may not be able to trust a system that hurt you. But that’s okay. You can sit in a hospital with other patients and let the doctor work.
Vulnerable. Name the wound without softening it. Jesus did not soften it either.
Coachable. The controlling heart cannot be taught. Loosening the grip is the lesson.
Stand Up. Shame keeps you seated. He calls you to the middle of the room anyway.
The Sunday Crowd. The crowd is a good place to hide. Surrender is the way out of it.
Politicking. When we refuse surrender, we reach for power. Watch where the heart hardens.
