So, what do you want, writer?

last week I posted a note here on Substack where I asked, basically, what do you want?

First of all, thank you to all of those who answered. I did it for a reason: so I could read what people say they want. You know, what we want and what we say we want are not always the same thing, so I shouldn’t really trust you.

Or should I?

The post has, at the time I’m writing this, Saturday morning, 156 replies, which is a lot. A lot, man. So you could say, as a rash conclusion, that people respond well to the idea of being asked their opinion.

We love to be asked our opinion, right? And that’s because we all want to be heard. We want to know people are paying attention to us. We want to know we are part of a group.

And that desire to be heard was the most common response in the post’s comments. Most people commented things like they want to share a message, share their writing, find an audience... you get the idea.

And also, in that regard, some people commented that they could write freely on Substack because, unlike other platforms, they felt they wouldn’t be harshly judged.

So it’s not only that we want to be read. We want to be read by people who feel like friends. Or at least people who like what we write. That’s, you know, being part of a group.

So, to answer my own question, why do I write?

Come on, man.

It’s obvious.
