As far as I know I’m the person that introduced Peter (writer of Back of the Napkin Bios) to delcath or at the very least the person who resurfaced the company him. It’s my understanding he ended up buying some and as such he’s joined me on this recent bull market.
The simplest way I could summarize Delcath if you weren’t already aware is that it’s a company which built a filter for melphalan. It’s intended for a combined drug/device combo of liver direct high dose chemotherapy. The blood supply is isolated from the rest of the body and is filtered for the chemo before it’s returned to circulation (otherwise the dose would be fatal to us). Its scarcest labor component is the availability of interventional radiologists and how many of them have learned to do percutaneous hepatic perfusions with melphalan. The procedure has decent enough tolerability that individuals usually go in for repeat therapies.
The surgery was long ago inspired by the ability of our liver cells to tolerate a much higher dose of this specific chemotherapy than the rest of our body. Here we are in present day waiting for colorectal and breast cancer liver metastases to recruit and readout. It is still a procedure that is in a minority of hands as it is not only a new procedure, but uveal melanoma is also an extremely rare cancer that delcath continues to grow into. Breast and colorectal cancers with liver metastases are by comparison, not so rare. With any luck a high dose of melphalan will also treat these metastases and as such what you have today is the starting place of a substantially larger future business.
