New Document: We Are the Community Action Tenants Union (2024 c.) — CATU Belfast

Our second week of posting CATU documents. Again, many thanks to CATU Belfast.

As noted previously:

Community Action Tenants Union is a national tenants’ union in Ireland. Established in 2019, it is a mass membership organisation of “renters, council tenants, mortgage holders and people in emergency & precarious living situations”. CATU is affiliated to ACORN International.

There are already a number of documents from CATU Belfast in the Archive, and this selection adds to them. These are leaflets focused on Belfast city, and in some instances areas of Belfast that outline the function and aims of CATU Belfast. The colour leaflet is in Irish and English and the individual areas are in English. All outline CATU’s purpose in succinct terms:

CATU stands for Community Action Tenants’ Union. We are an organisation owned by our members who fight alongside each other to win fights in our every day lives. Our union members are private renters, mortgage- holders, council tenants, and homeowners here in North Belfast.

We organise together to stop:

• Evictions

• Poor and Unsafe Conditions in Housing

• Increases in Rent and Housing Prices

• Vacant and Unused Housing

As a tenant, you have a right to:

• live comfortably, safely, and undisturbed,

• know who your landlord is,

• a rent book and an inventory,

• have your deposit protected in a Tenancy Deposit Scheme, and be protected from unfair or illegal eviction.

Your landlord has a responsibility to:

• maintain a safe, habitable environment

• repair plumbing, electricity, and gas appliances

• repair or replace any furniture, fixture, or appliance provided by the landlord
