Stop Applying to Jobs You’re 100% Qualified For

This one’s going to feel counterintuitive. Trust me for 3 minutes.

A candidate told me proudly: “I only apply to jobs where I match every requirement. No point wasting time otherwise.”

Sounds smart, right?

It’s actually one of the quietest ways people cap their own career.

Here’s what’s really going on.

When you match 100% of a job’s requirements, you are, by definition, applying for a job you’ve basically already done.

Which means it’s a lateral move. Same level. Same-ish pay. No stretch.

And here’s the kicker: those “safe” roles where you’re a perfect fit? They attract the most applicants, because they’re safe for everyone. So you’re a perfect fit in a pile of 400 other perfect fits.

Meanwhile, the roles that would actually move your career forward, the ones where you hit 70-80% of the requirements, those have smaller, less confident applicant pools. And that’s where the opportunity is.

There’s real data behind this: people who tend not to apply unless they meet nearly every qualification often talk themselves out of exactly the roles that would grow them. The requirement list is almost never a hard filter. It’s a wishlist.

So here’s how I’d rethink your target list:

  1. The 100% match roles: Apply, sure, but know you’re one of many. These are your floor, not your ceiling.

  2. The 70-85% match roles: These are your real targets. You can do most of it, you’d grow into the rest, and the pool is thinner. Apply here aggressively.

  3. The sub-60% match roles: Usually a stretch too far, you’ll spend energy for low odds. Skip unless there’s a specific reason (career pivot, dream company).

Now, the honest catch: applying to stretch roles means writing an application that bridges the gap. You have to connect what you have done to what they’re asking for.

That takes a bit more thought than the copy-paste “I match everything” application.

But that’s exactly the application that gets remembered. Because you’re not saying “I fit your box.”

You’re saying “here’s how I’d solve your problem” and that’s a more interesting thing for a hiring manager to read.

Qualified-and-forgettable is a worse position than stretch-and-memorable.

Aim a little higher than feels comfortable. That discomfort is the growth.

What’s a role you talked yourself out of applying to recently?
