I need to tell you something that took me way too long to figure out.

A huge chunk of the jobs you’re applying to right now? They don’t exist.

Posted to collect resumes, satisfy legal requirements,

Or just make a company look like it’s growing.

There’s even a name for it now, ghost jobs.

And according to recent data, nearly 67% of job postings fall into this category.

I know how that feels to hear.

You’ve been spending hours tailoring your resume & refreshing your inbox

And a massive portion of that effort was aimed at nothing.

It’s not your fault. But now that you know

Let’s make sure you never waste another hour on a ghost job again.

Here’s exactly how to spot one in 60 seconds.

  1. This is the fastest signal. If a job has been posted for more than 30 days without any changes, that’s your first red flag.

  2. Real roles with genuine urgency get filled or updated.

  3. A listing that’s been sitting untouched since last month is either abandoned or fake.

  4. On LinkedIn, you can see the “posted X days ago” timestamp right under the title. Anything over 30 days, proceed with serious caution.

  1. Fake postings are vague by design. They're written to cast a wide net, not to actually describe a real team or a real role.

  2. If you're reading a JD and it could apply to literally any company in the industry, no mention of the team, the tech stack, the actual day-to-day, that's a sign.

  3. Real job descriptions written by real hiring managers have texture.

  4. They mention the specific problem you'd be solving. They name tools. They talk about who you'd report to.

  1. Takes 10 seconds. If the company is actively hiring for this role, you'll usually find corroborating signals

  2. A LinkedIn post from the hiring manager, a mention in a press release, chatter on Glassdoor.

  3. If nothing comes up and the only trace of the job is the original posting, that silence tells you something.

  1. Search the job title on LinkedIn, Indeed, and Google.

  2. If the same company has posted the same role three times in six months

  3. One of two things is true, either they have a revolving door problem (also worth knowing), or they're maintaining a permanent ghost listing to keep building their pipeline. Neither is a good sign for a quick hire.

  1. On LinkedIn especially, check if the job posting has a recruiter or hiring manager named.

  2. Real postings increasingly have a face attached. If the posting is completely anonymous, just a company logo and an apply button, there's no accountability on the other end.

  3. That doesn't automatically mean it's fake, but combined with the other signals, it matters.

The job search system is broken in a way that wastes your time at scale.

Companies post jobs they don’t intend to fill.

ATS systems filter out qualified candidates before a human ever sees them.

And you’re left wondering why you’re not hearing back.

That’s exactly why I built Scale.jobs the way I did.

Our team of human assistants doesn’t just fire off applications

We research each role before applying, verify it’s real and active, and make sure your application is seen by an actual person wherever possible.

We’ve helped people cut their job search from five months down to six weeks, not by applying more, but by applying smarter.
