Hello Parents,
Learn Through Stories is running an amazing summer camp in Brooklyn from July 7th - August 29th.
A big part of that camp will be making 1,000 origami paper cranes throughout the summer.
Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a story to help with the steps of making the paper crane? That’s the beginning of this project. Read a story, make a crane. Or in this case, a cup. More stories, more creations to come.
I hope you and your kids like it, please post pictures of your cups! If you’re in Brooklyn come to the camp!
First time here.
Here’s our story series on emotional regulation: The Garden of Growing Hearts
Here’s our story series on math: Help Me Get this Bike!
In the Kingdom of Gami-Gami lived Queen Lazy-Legs, who never, EVER wanted to do anything! Her throne was so comfy-cozy that she stayed there all day long.
But Queen Lazy-Legs had a problem.
“UH!” Queen Lazy-Legs bellowed. “I am so thirsty.”
"Your Majesty," said Sir Wobble-Walk, bouncing on his wobbly legs. "Why don't we take a nice short walk down to the river to get a drink? That will feel nice, won't it?"
"NOPE!" said Queen Lazy Legs, slouching deeper into her throne. "It’s too far! And I'm too LAZY!"
"Your Highness," squeaked Lady Tip-Toe, dancing on her pointy shoes. "The river is just down the hill! You can do it!"
"I cannot do it! IT'S TOO FAR!" yawned Queen Lazy Legs, stretching out like a sleepy cat.
Just then, an ordinary white piece of paper walked into the room using its four corners like little feet.
“Hello, my name is Paper,” the piece of paper said. “Queen Lazy-Legs, I know your name is Queen Lazy-Legs. But, that doesn’t mean you have to be so lazy. You can choose to act however you want. So, why don’t we take a nice walk down to the river together and get a drink?”
"HA!" laughed Queen Lazy Legs. "You're just a plain old stinky piece of paper! WHOOSH!" She grabbed Paper, crumpled him up and threw him out the window.
“Wahhh!” Paper yelled as the wind carried him out of the castle, and landed next to the river.
A friendly old man named Aura walked up next to crumpled up Paper. He had a white robe on and a little golden light surrounded his bald head.
"Hello!" said Aura, bending like a rainbow. "You look a little crumpled. Want to stretch with me?"
“YES!” said Paper excitedly. “Queen Lazy-Legs crumpled me up and threw me out the window. I’m not feeling so good.”
“Yikes,” Aura said. “Before we begin, let’s just sit, relax, and pay attention to our breath.”
Paper started breathing deeply and relaxing. As he did, he slowly started uncrumpling. Soon, he was back to being a flat piece of Paper.
"Great, now that we're relaxed, stretch your top corner to your bottom corner - like this!" Aura swooshed and swished.
Paper folded its top corners down. SWISH! “That feels nice,” Paper said.
“Now with the flat side down, take your left corner and give yourself a hug!”
Paper gave itself a hug with its left corner and folded. “I love this!” Paper said.
"Now give yourself a hug with your right corner and fold!" Aura curved gracefully.
Paper was giving himself a hug with both sides. CREASE!
"Now the last part - fold your front triangle forward, the back triangle back and take one last deep breath!" Aura spun in a gentle twirl.
POOF! Paper wasn't flat anymore - he had transformed into a cup!
"WOW! I’m a cup!" gasped Paper. "I can hold water now! Thanks, Aura!"
Paper looked around, but Aura had vanished. “Aura? Where’d you go?”
Paper shrugged. Then he bent down and carefully filled himself with water from the river and started running with his bottom two corners back up to the castle.
When Queen Lazy Legs saw a cup dancing into her throne room, filled with sparkly water, her eyes grew wide as saucers.
“What is your name?" You beautiful little cup?” Queen Lazy-Legs asked.
"It’s me! Paper! I gave myself a hug and turned into a cup!" Paper giggled.
Queen Lazy-Legs bend down, carefully picked up Paper Cup, and took a drink of delicious water.
“I like you Paper.” Queen Lazy-Legs admitted. “But I’m still Queen Lazy-Legs and I need a nap!” She took Paper-Cup, put him in her pocket, and fell asleep.
Paper Cup had a long day, so he took a nap as well. As he did, he dreamed of what other things he could transform into.
Hey friends! Lets make a magical paper cup just like Paper did? Let's do it together!
What You Need:
One square piece of paper
A calm mind
Your beautiful smile
Steps:
First, let's get cozy and relaxed! Sit down, take three big breaths, and feel your body getting peaceful, just like Paper did when he was all crumpled up.
Now, take your square paper and fold it in half. Make sure to press the fold nice and flat with your fingers.
Time for hugs! With the folded edge at the bottom, take the left corner and give your paper a big hug to the middle. Press down to make a nice fold. Good job!
More hugs! Now take the right corner and give another big hug to the middle. Press down to make another nice fold. You're doing great!
Last magic fold! Take the top layer and fold it down in front, then take the back layer and fold it down in back. Open up the top like a flower blooming, and...
TADA! You made a cup, just like Paper! Now you can have a drink with Queen Lazy-Legs!
Remember: If your cup doesn't look perfect the first time, that's okay! Even Paper needed help from Aura to learn how to fold. Keep trying, and you'll make a beautiful cup!
