ソーラン節

「ヤーレンソーランソーラン…」という歌い出しの『ソーラン節』。意味は分からなくとも、インパクトのある歌い出しで印象に残るこの曲は、北海道の民謡です。

「民謡」という日本の音楽のジャンルを初めて聞く人もいるでしょうね。簡単に説明すると、「特定の地域で口伝えに歌われてきた伝統的な曲」のこと。1987年（昭和62年）の調査では、なんと約58,000曲もの民謡が今でも各地に残っているのだそう。

その内容はいくつかに分類でき、婚礼や正月などおめでたい席で歌われるものや、盆踊りのように身振り手振りのついた歌、さらには子守唄も「民謡」の仲間です。

冒頭に紹介した『ソーラン節』は、民謡の中でも最も数の多い「労働歌」に属します。これは農業や漁業など作業をする際に仕事の苦しさや単調さをまぎらわしたり、仕事の効率を上げたりするために手を動かしながら歌う歌。

『ソーラン節』はニシン漁の歌で、網を引き上げるときの掛け声、「やれ、そおら、そおら…」が変化したものだと言われています。極寒の海に漕ぎ出した船上での肉体労働はとてもつらいもの。明るく力強いメロディは、漁に携わる男たちをさぞ元気づけたことでしょう。

近年では、テレビドラマで中学生が歌い踊って有名になった現代風のアレンジも聞くことができます。

北海道だけでなく全国的に、また幅広い世代に親しまれている民謡の代表曲が『ソーラン節』だと言えるでしょう。
