Sometime this summer, Jordan Schneider of ChinaTalk asked what I would be interested in writing about. As someone who’d been hunting unicorns out of China for nearly a decade, I found my mind drifting to the question of “what is even Chinese?” instead of picking out the rising LLM players.
In the age of globalization, “China tech” was well-defined. There was no ambiguity about whether Alibaba or Tencent was Chinese. But as the world starts to turn its back on global integration, Chinese-founded companies rush to shed their roots — whether to gain easier access to foreign markets, capital, talent, or technologies. These forces spawned a new breed of services helping founders "de-Chinafy", creating a media coverage vacuum around China tech unless it touches on geopolitics.
This week, I said goodbye to my TechCrunch colleagues; a friend and I have been experimenting with something new and we shall share more when all is ready (it’s beyond Leapfrog). For now, this piece for ChinaTalk below is my way of marking the close of one era and capturing the dawn of the next:
