There are a few suggestions I make to clients that I get a lot of pushback on. Prologues are one of them. Point of view (multiple, omniscient) is another. Surprisingly, to me, dialogue tags are a big point of contention—people want to hold on to their fancy dialogue tags in the worst way.

On September 1st, I’ll celebrate five years of writing this blog and newsletter. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading it, and I hope you will continue to do so.

Over the past five years, I’ve gone back and forth over whether to paywall any of my content. Writing the articles and essays is something I spend a good deal of time and effort on, but I’ve hesitated to include paywalls for a number of reasons.

There are good arguments on both sides, and there’s some shame and cringe out there associated with paywalling and paid subscriptions.

On the one hand, my goal here is to connect with readers and writers, and I don’t want to put up any obstacles to doing that or to create any financial barriers that prevent someone from being able to read my content.

On the other hand, I am trying to make my living as a writer, a certified book coach, and a professional editor. I have a lot of value to offer in those areas, and I’d like to be paid for that work.

I’ve come up with a great compromise, I feel good about it, and it accomplishes both of those goals.

Most of my content is going to remain free.

The Newsletter? Free.

Essays about California and resources about the Golden State? Free.

My new livestream interview series, Origin Story: Writers and the Places They’re From? Free.

Book reviews? Free.

Even my original short fiction, essays, and poems? Free, despite the fact I’ve been warned to protect them behind a paywall.

So basically, what I’ve decided is, anything for readers, all free.

I’ve finally settled on a plan, and I have a really great offer for you. It’s one I hope you won’t refuse.

1. My writing related to book coaching.
Regular paid subscribers will have access to The Write Stuff, an ever-growing library of more than 200 articles and essays about the craft of writing and the writing life. The cost of an annual membership is currently $50 through September 30th. The price will increase for the first time on October 1st.

By charging something for this work, I’m able to elevate it and gear it specifically to writers who want to take their writing to the next level. Going forward, The Write Stuff articles will be even more focused and valuable—a full lesson on a specific topic.
