Porches are made for shooting the breeze, sharing family stories, passing down memories, meet-cutes, and goodnight kisses. Every porch has heard a good story or two. Some have been passed down through generations. Others have been told for the hundredth time—and somehow get a little better every time they’re shared.
So grab a blanket, settle into the porch swing, and stay awhile.
🏈📚💕
My husband and I have been married for a while. Along the way, we’ve figured out a few things that work for us.
Communication?
It’s a must.
Compromise?
That’s a given.
Never going to bed angry?
Probably a good idea.
In theory.
But there’s another one nobody talks about.
You don’t have to watch football together.
😂
Was that a collective gasp I just heard?
Or relief?
I know. I get it. You may love football. Or basketball. Or soccer.
Or Banana Ball.
Or maybe you don’t.
And that’s okay.
My husband can enjoy the occasional rom-com movie.
But he loves The Lord of the Rings.
Again, that’s okay.
De gustibus non disputantus.
It’s Latin.
Or at least I think so. I’ve said it for years. One of the few things I remember from high school. The actual Latin may be different, but our version means:
To each his own.
Or her own.
Please don’t ask me to conjugate verbs.
Every fall, televisions across America fill with touchdowns, penalty flags, instant replays, and grown men yelling at referees who cannot hear them.
When my husband and I first started dating, I remember asking him to puppysit while I went out of town.
“No problem,” he said.
He was going to watch football.
What could go wrong?
Well... every time he yelled at the television, my sweet little Muffet took off down the hallway.
Touchdown?
Run.
Bad call?
Run.
Interception?
Definitely run.
Poor Muffet didn’t know what was happening. Every time he yelled, she took off down the hallway, ducking under furniture like she was dodging linebackers. 😂
Eventually, she got used to football.
Me?
Well, let’s just say I find a nice quiet place to read... or write.
Fortunately, after all these years, we’ve developed a system.
He gets:
🏈 Touchdowns.
📣 Fourth downs.
🤦♂️ Bad calls.
I get:
💕 Meet-cutes.
💋 First kisses.
😍 Happily-ever-afters.
Everybody wins.
Occasionally, he’ll tell me about an unbelievable play.
I’ll nod appropriately.
He’ll watch the NFL Draft like I watch the Oscars.
On those nights, whoever isn’t glued to the television cooks.
Or... orders out.
My husband has a dream of going to our favorite restaurant on Kauai, right on Poipu Beach, and watching the Super Bowl.
I might could sacrifice for that dream.
A Mai Tai.
Poipu Beach.
The Pacific Ocean.
And football for one afternoon?
Yeah, I’m in.
It’s called compromise.
We’ve never had to love all the same things.
He can have football.
I’ll take rom-coms.
Sometimes love means flying to Kauai.
And sometimes... it means handing him the remote and reaching for your Kindle.
Football season is actually a wonderful time to be a romance reader.
Think about it.
While everyone else is worried about the scoreboard, you can be curled up beneath a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and a hero who knows exactly what to say.
Well... eventually.
Usually the hero has a few things to figure out first. 😂
💛 So, tell me—what does your spouse or significant other love that you happily let them enjoy without you? Football? Golf? Fishing? A television show you wouldn’t watch if someone paid you?
🏈 If you’ve got a team to cheer for, I understand. Go get loud. But if you’ve got a rom-com waiting... keep swinging.
With Love, Life, and Laughter (not always in that order),
Leanna 💛
Thanks for reading a Porch Swing Post from Love, Life, Laughter! This post is public so feel free to share it.
📚 Curl Up with a Good Book
If football season leaves you looking for a different kind of heart-pounding action, I’ve got you covered.
Maybe you’d rather spend Sunday afternoon with a cowboy...
To read about, that is. 😉
Cole knows a thing or two about horses, ranching, and raising a little girl.
Love?
That may require some coaching.
Charlie runs away from family drama hoping to find a little peace and quiet.
Instead, she finds mountains, camping mishaps, one boundary-challenged doodle... and a grumpy professor she definitely didn’t ask for.
🎄 Ready to Keep Strolling?
The leaves are falling, the nights are getting colder...
And somewhere in Storybrook, somebody is already untangling the Christmas lights.
The Wedding Ruse begins around Thanksgiving—but before Elle and Cash know it, Christmas is on its way.
Maybe it’s time we followed them.
➡️ Come on over to Christmas on the Front Porch.
🍂 Until next time, y’all! Let him have the remote. You’ve got books. I’ll see you on the Front Porch.
