Children are like Sycamore Seeds.

I’ll never forget the “Sycamore Chat” that Thom and I had today. He’s 5: a little rascally, doesn’t like to slow down much. But when he does, he asks the best questions.

Today, he was asking about his purpose.

I told him his main job was to learn and follow the clues God leaves him in his life: what he loves, what he’s naturally drawn to, what makes him happy - these are all clues.

I told him: your mission in life, your journey, is something you and God create together. And you’ll know it when you see it. You’ll feel it as you go. And if you’re listening, and don’t get distracted, you’ll know sooner than later.

He looked up at the sycamore tree above us and asked when the seeds would fall.

I told him: the seeds know when to fall. The knowledge is built into them — the perfect timing for them to grow, is written in what they are. Just like what you can grow into is written into who YOU are.
