Would you describe yourself as a person who appreciates the small joys in life? If you are here, perhaps even subscribed to this newsletter (thank you so much), I can hazard a guess that you probably are. You find pleasure in the things most people decide are not worth paying attention to - the way sunlight catches on coloured glass, receiving a hand-written card in the post, nabbing the last M&S Thai box and realising it’s been yellow stickered (iykyk).
I am, too, dear reader. Welcome to the club! This is a newsletter just for us.
In this house, we are realistic that not all weekends are created equal. Sometimes they fly by in a blur of errands and emails and too-high screen time, and sometimes they are just so delicious, so miraculous, that I do not even think about looking at my phone. The sun-drenched Saturday afternoon spent with the people we love; the lazy Sunday morning reading our books for an extra hour or two under the bedcovers, just because; the really, really good ice cream added to the weekly Sainsbury’s shop and devoured in one sitting (Hackney Gelato, FYI: the banana caramel & pecan one is life-changing).
This weekend just gone was very much in the latter category, full of magic everyday moments, or daily glimmers as Jules Von Hep ✨ calls them. I just had to share them with you!
Going to the village fete with my mum, James’ mum and my grandma, having a go on the tombola (didn’t win anything), eating delicious locally made ice cream and freshly fried sugary doughnuts that tasted of the seaside and secretly judging the entries for best misshapen vegetable 🥕
Getting up at 5am on Sunday morning to go to the local car boot fair, coffee and pain au chocolat in hand. I sold a bunch of summer clothes, books and accessories I just don’t wear/use any more, met lots of other lovely sellers and bought some very special antique and vintage homeware pieces too! Plus, I was home before midday. Winner winner chicken dinner (literally - I cooked a chicken, pea and leek traybake for tea) 🧸
Cleaning the house on Sunday afternoon (or more accurately, my half of the cleaning - James does downstairs, I do upstairs) while listening to a very interesting Historic Royal Palaces podcast about Charles I, even though I just wanted to flop on the sofa 🧹
Watching Sister Act II: Back in the Habit with James on Sunday evening and feeling all nostalgic for the 90s 🍿
Using my new (to me) vintage green wine glasses for pre-dinner aperitivo
These are the weekends that makes the working week feel lighter. I sit down at the kitchen table on Monday morning, rested, brimming with gratitude for what came before - the friends I got to squeeze tight, the moments I got to experience with the women who raised me, the village I get to be a part of.
Tell me your small pleasures! I’d love to hear them.
Until next time,
Lauren x
