Do Something: small actions, big impact

A quick note around the first of each month with one small, timely action you can take to help make the world a little better for our kids.

You can explore past posts in this series here.

Last week, I wrote about hosting a political fundraiser. It was outside of my comfort zone. Turns out though, it’s true that some of the most rewarding things are the actions we have to push ourselves to do.

We more than doubled our fundraising goal and know our work made a difference to the campaign. More than that, we made connections and had conversations under that oak canopy that will shape the future of Texas. I’ve been riding the high a bit ever since.

Then, as if it could get better, I remembered—BINGO.

Back in January, I made myself a 2026 Midterm BINGO card. Hosting a fundraiser was one of the boxes on my card.

I had created a list of things I wanted to accomplish before November. Some of the actions were easy, things I would almost inevitably do (like vote with a child in tow). But to win, I would need to do at least a few challenging items. BINGO was a silly little way to gamify some of my activism goals for the year.

Like so many of the best laid January plans though, I completely forgot about it.

Yesterday, I dug though my Google Drive to find it.

It took me a second to locate the right card because apparently I make BINGO cards more often than the average adult.

I make them for fun. Kinds of books to read, places in Austin to visit, strange things I might see at a coffee shop—unfortunately I have yet to have reencounter the man with a tiny monkey on his shoulder.

I make them for my professional goals. At conferences, I line squares with the names of people I’d like to meet. BINGO cards have gotten me through long, painful meetings where I pretend to take notes while actually crossing out boxes for phrases like “mission alignment.”

Years ago I used one to survive a long weekend around a person I found insufferable. Every passive aggressive jab got me one step closer to winning BINGO.

I give myself prizes sometimes.

I can’t remember when or why I started doing this. But it’s fun. Sometimes I even invite other people to join me.

So that’s the action this month.

Print my BINGO card and do the things. Anything you have done in 2026 counts.

If you send me your winning card, I’ll send you a prize.

And we all will win a better world.
