Hello Friends!
Who would have thought that discussing a topic often avoided in polite conversation—death and mortality—would turn out to be life-affirming, freeing, and bring peace of mind and even joy? Certainly not my 100-year-old mom, a bona fide death denier, who never wants to discuss the topic, and that works well for her. While I respect her wishes, I’ve taken a different path by expanding my understanding of the subject.
In my latest story for AARP’s The Ethel, I share my findings about Death Cafés, workshops, and other venues to help us clarify our feelings about our finite time and initiate conversations with loved ones so they know our wishes.

On a different note, I’ll be the co-host for the next MoCo Underground Writers Showcase reading on Zoom on Thursday, August 13th, 7.00 pm Eastern time.
To read your work, submit 1,000-2,000 words to MoCoUnderground@gmail.com AND lauralynnsturza@gmail.com along with a short (<150 words) biography and a photo.
To attend this free event, register at the Sandy Spring Museum’s site, which generously hosts the MoCo Underground Writers Showcase.
My co-host, Pierre-Alain, and I look forward to seeing you there and to hearing from those who would like to read their work.
All the best,
Laura
The first two photos were taken by Elisa and Tom. The third is a live MoCo Underground event.
