Four Students Living with CF Share Their Stories: What does a scholarship mean to them?
Every year, The Bonnell Foundation awards scholarships to students living with cystic fibrosis who are pursuing their dreams through college, trade school, or community college. We know that managing CF comes with significant medical expenses, making higher education even more challenging for many families. That’s why we’re proud to provide scholarships that help students move forward with their educational goals. Each year, our top scholarship recipients receive $2,500 to support their journey, and their heartfelt gratitude reminds us why this program is so important.
On today’s podcast, we’re joined by three remarkable scholarship recipients: Serena Scillia, Jayla Jacobs, and Ben Ferguson.
Serena Scillia is a 20-year-old from Westerville, Ohio, attending Bowling Green State University, where she is studying Early Childhood Education with hopes of becoming a teacher. She enjoys coaching volleyball, reading, and spending time with her family and dog.
Jayla Jacobs is 18 years old and was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 5. She has become a passionate advocate for the CF community, speaking at numerous events, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Guys and Dolls Auction Gala, where she helped raise $2.2 million for CF research. This fall, she will attend North Carolina State University. She enjoys outdoor activities, drawing, and writing stories. Jayla has three brothers, including two living brothers who also have cystic fibrosis. Isabella Banaszynski is an 18 years old and will be attending Drexell University in Philadelphia in the Fall. She is also a club wrestler. She has a younger brother that does not have CF. Majoring in architecture.
Ben Ferguson is from Columbus, Indiana, and attends Taylor University. He comes from a family of six children, with four brothers and one sister. Ben is the only member of his family living with cystic fibrosis.
